Unless you're giving birth to a child or are employed in the health care industry, you likely hope you never have to set foot in a hospital. But, when you do, which one should you go to? If you live in Tampa, Florida, you'll see that the variety of respectable and cutting-edge Tampa hospitals is astounding.

Tampa hospitals range from longstanding health care providers like Tampa General Hospital to state-of-the-art facilities like H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center. While this isn't an exhaustive look at Tampa hospitals and the breadth of services they offer, it should at the very least shed more light on the variety of medical options Tampa residents and visitors have.

Located on Davis Island, Tampa General Hospital (TGH) is located within 20 minutes of many communities, including South Tampa, Hyde Park, Ybor City, and Brandon. Tampa General Hospital was the site of Florida's first successful heart transplant and is one of the Sunshine State's largest hospitals.

With a comprehensive approach to health care, TGH provides services ranging from heart health to women's care. Tampa General Hospital is also the only Level I Trauma Center in West Central Florida.

This private, not-for-profit hospital is also one of the largest employers in the Tampa area, providing jobs for around 6,000 locals.

University Community Hospital (UCH) opened in 1968 right across the street from the University of South Florida. UCH has evolved into a major health care provider throughout the Tampa area with a satellite hospital in the northwest Tampa community of Carrollwood and with several affiliated health facilities, including the Pepin Heart Center.

UCH provides specialized care through its Centers of Excellence, which devote attention to health needs including cancer, women's care, and pediatrics, among others.

Saint Joseph's Hospital is a comprehensive facility within the Baycare Health System. Saint Joseph's Women's Hospital, Mease Hospital, Morton Plant Hospital, and South Florida Baptist Hospital all belong to the Baycare Health System.

Founded in 1934, Saint Joseph's Hospital focuses on over 70 health specialties, including cancer care, cardiovascular, and dietary services. Saint Joseph's also helps patients make strides toward health with a nationally accredited. rehabilitation program and the Women's Healthy Heart program. Saint Joseph's also provides quality care to its young patients with a children's trauma center and children's cardiovascular facility.

Named for the former Florida Speaker of the House who led the way in bringing a major cancer center to West Central Florida, H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center opened in 1986 to begin serving tens of thousands of Floridians who find themselves in need of comprehensive cancer care.

Providing a range of clinical trials, surgical and chemotherapeutic options, and nutritional and rehabilitation services, H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center is designated a comprehensive cancer center by the National Cancer Institute (NCI).
