Host a Dog Party

Della R. Buckland
We all get birthday parties and sometimes a party for really no occasion, why not host a party for your four-legged family member that will leave you and your guests howling for more. Here are a few simple suggestions to keep in mind while you plan your pup's big event:

Planning: Keep the guest list small. It is better for all when pets know each other already and do not mind sharing the same location. A fenced backyard or fenced dog run at your local park will allow the little ones a chance to play and socialize while their parents do the same. It is always good to have a back up location if the weather will not cooperate.

Decorations: From simple paw prints in chalk on your walkway to cut outs of your pet theme from bones to fire hydrants will add to the feel. Even a centerpiece of rawhide treats can be enjoyed by the little ones during and after the party. The centerpiece and be taken apart and each guest take a piece home. Just make sure that there is nothing that can harm the dogs like glue. Even have the dogs dress up from a simple flashy collar to a tux. This will add a little fun to the party and the hostess or host can always have a "contest" with a dog treat basket give away.

Music: Dog-themed of course. Any song that involves the word dog or pet would be appropriate. The most notable titles would be "Who Let the Dogs Out" by the Baja Men or the classic "Hound Dog" by Elvis Presley.

Food: Keep the doggie theme going for you as well as your pet party-goers. For the two-legged guests, keep the theme going with puppy chow (aka Chex Mix) served in little doggie bowls. Hot dogs with all the fixings or if the weather is cool, beef stew in a thick gravy is a good meal for the party. Even a bone shaped cake can be served as dessert. For drinks, there is always the dog's favorite, water, but any beverage with a doggie type name, such as a Salty Dog, can be served. Served the drinks wrapped in doggie bags. For the four legged set, Biscuits or other treats are a good choice, even a trip to the pet bakery. Just be careful what you serve the little ones and make sure that it is good for them. As for drinks, water is your primary choice, but with a little search on the internet, you can always find doggie "beer" called Rovers Bowser Beer made with malt barely and beef broth.

With a little beforehand thought you too can bring your pets along for the party.
