Space for a Fix-a-Bike Event
The most important thing you need for a fix-a-bike night gathering is space for a few motorcycles to park in a convenient, lighted area. This could be a garage, carport or even a spacious back yard. You will also need tools to work on the motorcycles.
Most bikes have saddlebags or luggage trunks, so a lot of people carry tools with them. You'll probably have plenty of tools to go around. You'll need to bring things like rags, washing pails and oil collection buckets, depending on who wants to do what work.
Learn and Teach at Fix-a-Bike Night
I have been to several of these fix-a-bike events at friends houses. Bike clubs and organizations sponsor them at member's houses too. Most motorcycle riders know a little something about working on their bike. This is a great way to share knowledge and just hang out together.
Start out small and invite a few friends or send out an open invitation for the entire day. Friends will come and go all day. The garage will always have room for more. Some one may say they need an oil change and are not sure how to do it. Instruct them on what they need to bring and offer to tell them how to do it.
Fix-a-bike gatherings are a great way to teach younger, less experienced motorcyclists some basics of motorcycle mechanics. You may even learn a few tricks yourself. It is also fun to hang out with friends who enjoy their motorcycle as much as you do.
Some bikers may show up just to socialize, some will work on their bike and some may even wash and polish bikes. You can even barter and trade work with a friend: "I'll change your oil if you wash my bike."
Serve Food at Fix-a-Bike Night
This is a good time to barbeque if the weather cooperates with you. Ask friends to bring dishes or meat to put on the grill. We have also had friends bring crock pots full of various dishes and everyone helped their self whenever they wanted to. The food served can be as simple or elaborate as you want, but it should be plentiful! Bikers like to eat, socialize and fix their bikes...not necessarily in that order.
Make it a fun, learning event for your motorcycle friends. You may find that someone else will agree to host a fix-a-bike night next month. It can become a monthly thing for you and your friends. You'll have fun and keep the bikes in good repair, or at least nice and clean!
