Normally when I want a snack I go for something salty like crackers or chips. I also enjoy snacking on apples, bananas and peaches. Once in awhile I get an incredible craving for something so sweet I can barely stay in my seat after eating it. When this urge hits, I turn to Hostess Suzy Q's. I still am not sure why I love to eat them so much.
I thought perhaps a look at the nutritional information, or non-nutritional however you look at it, may give me a clue as to why I love to eat these treats. I think I found it, amongst a list of chemical names that I cannot even begin to pronounce, sugar is the first ingredient. No surprise there. As if the sugar isn't enough to break my sweet tooth, they graciously added a generous helping of high fructose corn syrup. Wow no wonder when I finish a package of Suzy Q's I feel like re-roofing my house. But let's skip all the technical stuff of the delectable Suzy Q for just a moment and concentrate on the taste.
When you first bite into one of these cakes you find a moist chocolaty texture. As your teeth sink into the cake your tongue makes contact with that creamy filling that is oh so sweet. I wonder what is in that cream filling and if I could convince hostess to sell it by the bowlful. As you chew the tasty bite the flavors of the cake and cream filling combine in an explosion of sweetness. The flavors mix together so perfectly that I begin to float off into a utopia where Suzy Q's fall from every tree in Hostess Ville.
I read further into the nutritional information to find that the Suzy Q is incredibly high in fat and calories. Lucky for me I also found that they added "B" vitamins so it truly has some nutritional value, I think. I will admit that I only allow myself 2 or 3 Suzy Q's per year. They do fulfill that craving that I get once in a great while for something that is incredibly sweet. As the seal on the back of the package says, Hostess truly does deliver great taste. The next time you need a sugar fix, run down to the local c-store and pick up a package of Hostess Suzy Q's, the world's most perfect manufactured food
