Hosts: 5 Ways to Improve Your Thanksgiving Day Festivities

Stephanie Modkins
Want to improve your Thanksgiving Day festivities? You're not alone. Millions of people wish this 24-hour period were more pleasant. The good news is that you can change how "things" usually go by altering five key activities.

1- Cook your food early.

Avoid waiting until the last minute to shop and cook your food. You can refrigerate your finished dishes ahead of time and just pull them out for heating on Thanksgiving Day. This system works best for most people because you have room for error and less stress. This way, when you're ready to serve guests everything goes much more smoothly.

2- Limit the liquor you serve.

The celebration of a holiday is some people's excuse to get drunk. Unfortunately, this kind of behavior is never a good idea, especially when children are around. For this reason, only buy a certain number of wine (or beer) bottles. This way, no one can go too far - at least at your house.

3- Exclude negative relatives.

This next way to improve your Thanksgiving Day festivities takes a lot of courage. If you have relatives who cause a lot of trouble when they unite with other family members, don't invite them over. Celebrate without them. Don't allow a few people to ruin the fun for everyone else. Yes, you'll hear about their discontent later on, but you won't really care.

4- Create a "play" room for kids.

If your family is full of rowdy children who stay busy, create a playroom for them. You can set up a bedroom or the den with hand held video games, coloring books and Crayolas as well as toys. By keeping the little ones out of the way, the adults (and you) will get a breather and be able to enjoy more social time together.

5- Prepare for unexpected emergencies

By now, you probable know that most holidays don't go over without some kind of snafu. So, improve your Thanksgiving Day festivities by planning for a few emergencies. Have antacids and Imodium handy for eaters with weak stomachs. Know where your emergency kit is just in case someone gets hurt. Wash extra bedding just in case a guest can't drive home because of the weather. By preparing for a variety of upsets, you won't actually be upset when they occur.

Incorporate these 5 things into your turkey day and have a better one. You'll feel less pressure and be able to enjoy this holiday with everyone else.
