Spartan 300 Costumes
The film 300 has got everyone wild about ancient Greece. The great news is, that the toga never really goes out of style, so you'll be able to reuse this costume later. Spartan 300 costumes are the easiest costumes to make. Get creative, and use pictures from the movie as a guide. Make your costume as simple as possible.
Queen Gorgo Costume
A simple toga can be fashioned from white or cream bed sheets or fabric, fastened with clasps in the appropriate places. Use chains or a metal belt to bind the midriff. The Queen Gorgo costume, for example, should be all white, floor length and preferably of a silky fabric. Polyester will work fine for this purpose. Rummage through your jewelry collection to see what fasteners or bracelets you have that might do the trick. There's no need to do any sewing if you don't want to. Check out the Hypatia-Lovers tutorial on how to make a doric chiton out of a simple bedsheet.
Leonidas Costume
If you're looking to go as warrior King Leonidas, simply use a red sheet or fabric. Wear some red briefs, preferably of leather, faux-leather. Then fasten a red cape at the neck. Belt buckles, jewelry, napkin rings, and other items you have lying around the house make excellent clasps. Experiment and see what works best.
Other accessories can be easily made from inexpensive materials. Fashion a sword, helmet, greavers and bracers out of cardboard. Then spray-paint gold. Full instructions for the helmet are available on the Instructibles website.
For an alternate method, check out the Tailsweb tutorial. This tutorial goes over how to make a papier mache helmet with a ridge of hair, and also covers methods of making greaves, belts, capes, shields, weapons, and shoulder pads.
A garbage can lid is also ideal for the shield. Fasten a loop to the inside so you'll have a way to hold it, then spray paint gold to match the other accessories.
High School Musical Costume
The High School Musical costumes are very popular, and also very easy to make or throw together.
Cheerleader Costume
Simply select a matching short skirt and shirt outfit. Almost anything will do, but preferably it should be red with some white trim. Take two pieces of felt, one white and one red. Cut out the letters, E, H and S from the red felt. Then lay the letters down on the white felt and trace them with a pencil. Cut out this base, and glue the letters to the white felt base. Use glue to attach the felt to the shirt, or sew it on.
To make pom-poms, cut long strips of red and white colored paper, then bind them together at the end. Attach these to a short stick, which you will use as a handle.
Sharpay Costume
This is a toughie. Most people don't have bright blue satin gathering dust in their closets. However, if you do, and you want to go as Sharpay, consider yourself lucky. You can also search the discount racks or thrift shop for a dress which might fit the bill. Otherwise, you may end up having to make this dress by hand, since just about all of the costumes online are for kids. Check online for prom dress patterns and see what you come up with. Be sure to check eBay, as they often have great deals. Or put a wanted ad on Craigslist for used prom dresses, and describe what you're looking for. Again, look at pictures of costumes, or pictures from the film to get the look you want.
Add a headset with a microphone to make the costume complete. If you don't have a headset, this can be fashioned fairly easily out of a pair of headphones. Attach the microphone with tape. Blonde wigs can be had at Wal-Mart for around $5.
If it's too difficult to find or make the blue satin dress costume, then select another Sharpay costume idea from images from High School Musical. Just make sure the costume isn't too generic, or you'll spend the whole evening explaining to people who you are supposed to be.
Gabriella Costume
This is the simplest costume of all. Simply use any red dress, preferably one with no sleeves. Don a bracelet and a necklace. Charm bracelets work well. Place a cameo brooch at the center of the neckline of the dress. Match the dress with red pumps.
Troy Costume
There are a couple of popular Troy costumes. One is a basketball costume, which you can assemble simply by putting together a sleeveless red tunic with some red shorts. Then use fabric paints or construction paper to put "Wildcats" and "14" on the front.
The other popular costume is a white jogging suit. This can be easily put together by wearing a simple white tunic, with a white jacket and white jogging trousers with red stripes down the arms and legs. If you can't find exactly the right jogging suit, you can simply sew three red stripes onto the jogging suit sleeves and trouser legs. Place a red letter "E" inside a red circle on the left lapel.
Hairspray Costumes
Tracy Turnblad Costume
One easy Tracy Turnblad costume involves a simple short sleeved white blouse, with a pleated black and yellow plaid skirt. Preferably you should be plus size to pull this costume off. However, if you're not, it's fairly simple to wrap a towel or two around your waist and middle. Also, padding the bra can help to create the appearance of a heavy-set woman. Don't bother trying to make any visible part of your body look fat, such as your face or calves.
If you don't have long dark hair, add a short dark wig in a sixties style. The ends of the wig should be curled upward. However, keep in mind that if your wig is made of cheap synthetic fibers, you won't be able to curl it with a curling iron without melting it. Instead, wrap it in soft sponge rollers and allow it to sit curled up for several days. Then let the rollers out and see how well the curl has set. You can also use hairspray to hold this curl in place.
Edna Turnblad Costume
This costume is fine for either a man or a woman, but take sizing into account when purchasing a dress or material. One costume idea is a medium to light pink semiformal dress, preferably sequined but satin may do in a pinch. If this is too difficult to find, substitute any "fat old lady" dress. Try flannel plaid or a homely floral print. If you're not portly, follow the directions for Tracy Turnblad to make yourself look heavier, but ramp it up a few notches.
Depending on what dress you've chosen, select your accessories. For example, the flannel plaid dress would be well finished off by a pair of old-fashioned ladies glasses, hanging on a chain around your neck. Or if your choice of dress is more flamboyant, select a colorful feather boa. For flamboyant Edna Turnblad costume ideas, look up Harvey Feurstein's onstage portrayal of Edna Turnblad.
A sixties style medium to dark-colored wig or sixties hairstyle will finish off the effect.
Venom or Black Spider-man Costumes
Venom, from the movie Spider-man 3, is a very popular costume. To make this costume, get a simple black top and bottom set. These items should be elastic and tight-fitting. Long underwear will work as long as it's smooth. Also, a black leotard and tights will work.
Then use fabric paints to paint on a spiderweb design. Refer to pictures from the movie or other costume designs to come up with an original yet recognizable pattern. Before you apply the paint, very carefully and very lightly mark where it needs to go with a sharpened piece of chalk.
You can make your mask from black tights or panty-hose. Use the foot-end, cutting far enough up the leg so the mask will cover your head and neck. There's usually no need to cut eye or mouth holes, as this will only make the hose run. Use your fabric paints to create a spiderweb design on the mask. Make sure all fabric paint has dried thoroughly before putting the costume on.
Also, venom masks are available online. I saw several on eBay and other sites going for a low price. There seem to be two current permutations of Venom. One is the "Black Spider-man" I described above. The other is a black-suited figure with a bold white spider design on its chest, and a hideous monster face with its jaw hanging open, showing sharp teeth. It's best to keep these two designs separate and distinct from one another, as mixing them up may cause confusion.
Ghost Rider Costume
This is another fairly simple costume to make. Just get some black pants, preferably black jeans or black leather or faux-leather pants, and wear a black shirt with a black leather or faux-leather jacket. You can either buy a skull mask, or paint your face like a skull. Then place an orange and yellow tuft of "hair" above the mask or face-painting to represent fire. This can be made from acrylic fiber, paper, or other soft material which you have on hand. You can also use paints or food coloring to get this coloration just right.
Find some long leather or faux-leather gloves. Create some "spikes" out of material you have on hand. However, avoid making them from metal, or somebody might get hurt. Paint these silver and glue them onto the sleeve portion of the gloves.
Finish your costume off with some black athletic shoes or boots.
World of Warcraft Costumes
Murloc Costume
This would be most easily created by purchasing a white leotard and tights set, or full-body leotard with feet. Then use an airbrush to paint various colors on the cloth. Don't attempt to use spray paint; it doesn't have a controlled flow. You will need to pull the cloth over a dummy or other frame to keep the color from bleeding through to another part of the garment. Refer to pictures to get you patterns and designs. You can either paint some pantyhose with the face design, or paint your face with the design. Use strips of paper or stiff cloth to represent the "spines" on the murloc's back. Laundry starch can help you achieve this effect. Allow all paint to dry thoroughly before putting on the costume.
The list of World of Warcraft characters is lengthy. Get creative, and come up with your own costume ideas for your favorite character. If you need a little inspiration, just check out the World of Warcraft official website for World of Warcraft costume winners from past years.
