It was reminiscent of the old Minnesota Scandinavian gibberish that White made famous on the "Golden Girls"!
"Hot in Cleveland" is kind of a "Golden Girls," 21st century style!
I hate to divulge this torrid secret, but I still watch reruns of "The Golden Girls" because of the witty one-liners that still make me laugh. "Hot in Cleveland" sets up the same response in my laugh-o-meter!
Apparently, the Betty White character, Elka, was only supposed to be a guest spot but was such an audience grabber that White was cast as a regular. It might be a little known fact for those who were not alive during the "Golden Girls" reign during the eighties that the same thing happened with the character of Sophia Petrillo, played by the acid-tongued Estelle Getty.
Betty White is an American treasure and she is still as funny, if not funnier than she was during the "Golden Girls" seasons of fun. The cast that surrounds her really seem to come alive when she brightens the stage with a witty one- liner, or tells a story about days past.
This second season began with a blast from the past with a visit by Mary Tyler Moore, bringing White and Moore together for the first time since the heady days of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" when White played slutty Sue Ann Nivens, everybody's Happy Homemaker!
It continues to heat up with a guest appearance by Bonnie Franklin, Valerie Bertinelli's mom during "One Day at a Time," a Norman Lear classic of the eighties.
Frankly, it is amazing to me to see really good comedy again! Yes, "Modern Family" is pretty funny, and "Two and a Half Men" is comedic, but for really good laughs aimed at a certain type of humor that is hard to find these days, "Hot in Cleveland" is on a roll filled with sass and class!
My guess is that there will be other stars in this seasons' coming episodes that are reminders of good comedy from days of yore.
Pretty soon, that kitchen table on "Hot in Cleveland" will be throwing out grins that will help us all face our daily lives with a little more zip in our step!
