Hot Dog Bar: For a Casual Event

Dee Dee Smith
Planning for a special event can be time consuming and sometimes complicated. This is especially true when trying to decide what to include on the menu. For more casual events such as birthday or sports viewing parties, the hot dog bar is ideal. Similar to a taco or salad bar, various items are made available to allow each individual to create their own version of the ever so popular hot dog.

Hot Dogs for the Bar:

For non-beef eaters consider offering turkey hot dogs as an option. Foot longs can also be both a fun and filling choice.

Ideas for Toppings for the Bar:

coleslaw
cucumbers
tomatoes
onions
pickles
chili
sauerkraut
chopped onion (both white and red)
green olives
sweet pickle relish (or slices)
dill pickle relish (or slices)
tomato slices
shredded cheese
olives
jalapeno pepper slices

Condiments for the Bar:

ketchup
mustard (honey and spicy)
mayonnaise
hot sauce
barbecue sauce

Breads for the Bar:

whole wheat buns
white bread buns
foot long buns (if needed)

Tips for Managing Your Hot Dog Bar:

Serve hot dogs and buns in a buffet server/warming tray.
Pre-chop/slice toppings.
Organize your bar with buns first, hot dogs second, toppings third and condiments last.

Hot dogs are quite inexpensive and very easy to eat. Serve hot dogs with an array of side dishes such as chips, baked beans, potato salad, macaroni and cheese, corn on the cob, french fries and apple sauce.
