Hot Fishing Spots in the Chesapeake Bay

Barbara Raskauskas
Anglers will appreciate the many fishing options available in and along the shores of the Chesapeake Bay. The largest U.S. estuary, where fresh water meets salt water that leads to the sea, the Chesapeake Bay starts in northeast Maryland and extends south about 200 miles to Norfolk, Virginia. The width of Chesapeake Bay ranges from less than four miles across up to 35 miles across. There are choice fishing locations in the upper, middle and lower Chesapeake Bay.

Maryland Department of Natural Resources provides information on what to throw back, licensing and other valuable fishing information in their 2010 Maryland fishing guide available here.

Upper Chesapeake Bay

Upper Chesapeake is from the bay bridge north. See the map here.

Sandy Point State Park is located in the upper Chesapeake Bay, near Annapolis and just north of route 50 and the bay bridge. Fishing is permitted from the shore or use the boat ramp. Sandy Point also has areas to picnic and swim for a family day.

Access Tea Kettle Shoals by boat at 39° 12'40"N 76° 20'48"W from the eastern shore of Maryland. Anglers report catching both rockfish (striped bass) and perch.

Middle Chesapeake Bay

Middle Chesapeake Bay starts at the bay bridge and extends south to about Cove Point, north of the mouth of the Patuxent River. See the map here.

The Hill is located south of route 50 and the bay bridge. For boaters, the coordinates are 38° 47' 00'' N 76° 24' 00'' W. This spot, near buoy 84, is known for flounder and croaker.

Black drum, flounder and trout can be found at Stone Rock, which is at 38° 39' 00'' N 76° 24' 50'' W in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay. To reach Stone Rock, take your boat to a boat ramp on the eastern shore of Maryland near Tilghman.

Lower Chesapeake Bay

Lower Chesapeake Bay starts about at the mouth of the Patuxent River. See map here.

The Targets are located 38° 13' 40'' N 76° 20' 40'' W, which is close to the eastern shore of Maryland and south of the Patuxent River. Rockfish, or striped bass, have been abundantly available.

Virginia's Kiptopeke State Park is located on the southern tip of the Delmarva (Delaware, Maryland, Virginia) peninsula. Fish from the shoreline or use the boat ramp to venture out into the Chesapeake Bay. Swimming is also allowed.

The Bay is a real asset. Here in Virginia, some of the grocery stores want to sell you WEST COAST OYSTERS. That stuff is bait! Yuck! Shame on them. The Chesapeake and the ocean on this coast sell the good stuff. Want to bet they sell tons of EAST COAST OYSTERS along the West Coast? Kind of like selling all the leather in the U.S. to Japan...
