When considering an overall hair color or highlight you need to be very cautious of hair breakage, burning of the scalp, and the right color shade. If not you will have some major problems.
Most African American women feel they can not wear certain hair colors or highlights. This is true to a certain point. If the hair is naturally black, which in most cases is you have to lift the color a few shades in order to see any difference. How far should you life the black hair? Which hair color would look best?
From my point of view I prefer to see rich honey blondes, a soft bronze, copper red, mahogany, coffee brown, caramel, chocolate brown mixed with golden brown, or deep red highlights. Whatever you do don't go with platinum. This will look so fake and very unnatural.
If you are a African American who relaxes the hair you need to consider deep conditioning the hair before and after each color application. Due to the ingredients in the relaxer it will slightly break some of the hair no matter how careful you are applying. Then if you apply color on top of a relaxer the hair will go through a shock having too much chemical on it and get dry, brittle, and possibly break off.
We all enjoy hair color or highlights, but remember first you must have healthy hair. That is the main key. Then as long as you have healthy hair, color and a good cut would be the next step.
Are there certain hair color products to use specifically on African American? Yes, you have Dark and Lovely,Creme of Nature, but to be honest with you can you use any hair color product just like anyone else as long as your hair is in tip top shape.
African American women tend to straighten their hair using a relaxer, but so does anyone else who has naturally curly hair. Be smart when choosing a color, highly suggest a semi-permanent. This will be less harsh on the hair.
If the hair tends to break off from every day brushing, stress, or from certain medications, then maybe consider a homemade hair color recipe like Kool-Aid, lemon juice, apple cider, or jello.
