Back in the early 1990's, whenever I would have the summer off from high school and later in college, finding a summer job was not always an easy thing to do. Depending on the economy of the area - some places are easier than others.

In my case it was in Northern Maine, where the economy has never been the greatest - so typically during high school I was relegated to working for the town, sweeping sidewalks or cutting grass.

However, the area of Southern Maine offers a great assortment of opportunities for students and other seasonal workers during the summer months. Since tourism is a major part of the Southern Maine economy, students of all ages can find opportunities and experience throughout the region, mostly along the coast.

During 2008, summer jobs in Southern Maine abound along the oceanfront.

Along the seacoast, the majority of opportunities are in the service industry sector, including hotel maids, hotel service, restaurant wait staff, cooks, lifeguards, and other positions related to the seacoast tourism industry.

A few examples of some current openings for summer jobs in Southern Maine include:

Robert's Maine Grill and Market in Kittery Maine

Robert's is currently seeking full time and seasonal bussers/runners and experienced Line Cooks. Roger's is a casual restaurant in Kittery. The busser/runner positions are perfect for high school students looking for a good amount of extra cash over the summer - typically these positions pay decent wages. Even better paying, is the position for line cook, however previous cooking experience is required so this position is probably best for College students who have this kind of experience and are looking to make some good cash over the summer and gain additional cooking experience. To apply for these openings, stop by the restaurant at 326 Route 1 for an application, or fax your resume to 207-439-4790.

Bob's Clam Hut in Kittery Maine

Bob's is seeking seasonal help - this includes counter clerk, bussing, dishwashing, and most other restaurant staff positions. Bob's is a very busy and very popular eatery on the Maine coast - and they hire a fair number of students over the summer. The work environment is fast paced and fun - and pay is very reasonable for a summer position. Typically no experience is necessary for these positions, although higher pay (and greater responsibility) is likely offered for better past experience. To apply for these job openings, stop by the restaurant at 315 Route 1 or fax your resume to 207-439-4233.

JJ's Eatery in Old Orchard Beach

Old Orchard Beach is a popular ocean side playground featuring a carnival and many shops, hotels, restaurants and bars. JJ's is looking for bartenders starting in April. The job opening specifies that experience is preferred, which means that while bartenders with experience would likely receive higher pay - if you're looking to break into the bartender career and have little or no experience, JJ's may still hire you and might be willing to train. To apply for these positions, contact Christina at 934-0222 or 831-1131.

Anchorage Inn in York, ME

York is a fun and exciting upscale oceanfront community that offers some of the finest hotels and restaurants. The Anchorage Inn is a beautiful and large hotel and they are offering opportunities in every position including Front Desk, Housekeepers, Maintenance, Laundry Attendant, Café, and Payroll. Some of these positions including payroll and maintenance would be ideal experience-building positions for college or trade school students, the remaining positions would be suitable for high school students or exchange students from other countries looking to make some decent income over the summer. Keep in mind that compensation is based on experience. To apply for this position, email your resume to Groupsales @ anchorageinn.com.

These are only a few examples of the enormous number of summer jobs in Southern Maine that are available to anyone who might be interested in seasonal work in this area - there are many, many more opportunities as well. For more openings - keep an eye on the local newspapers, including the Portland and Portsmouth newspapers, as well as maine.craigslist.org.
