So, how did podcasting come to be, and where exactly does it fit in to all the current Internet trends?
The term that is now referred to as "podcast" first began at a time when mp3 files were being readily available, shared, downloaded, and then played on Apple's music playing device_ the Ipod. These Apple devices quickly became popular as people learned the various ways in which Ipods could be used_ some of which include the obvious use - storing and listening to music. But even greater, Ipods can also be used to store files and also some have used them to load firmware or an operating system too.
Some genius minds had the idea of encompassing links to media files within RSS feeds and then downloading the media to a computer. When RSS feeds began to evolve, then Ipod podcasting quickly took off and become an extremely popular way to distribute files and share with others. This is when people begin to grab hold to the idea of using podcasting as a way to host radio syndication. Now, there is a huge genre of podcasts widespread throughout the Internet.
With the new podcast trend, there has also been software created with the sole purpose of automating the extraction of links and then downloading the podcast episodes. These applications are called "podcast clients".
It was only a matter of time before podcasting began to expand and go beyond just the Apple Ipod. And it was no longer just simple Ipod podcast episodes or media file sharing. More genius minds were able to take those portable PlayStation consoles and use them as podcast players. Now, thanks to those genius minds; there are what is called PSP podcast.
Presently, Ipod podcast media is still thriving and continuous to be very popular. Still it is having also to compete with the also very popular, Internet videos. But because there are still a whole lot of fans of podcast media and file sharing, then this podcasting trend does not seem to be going anywhere.
