Hot Winter Working Girl Boots: 2011

Some Boots Were Made for Walking; These Were Made for Working

Renee Shaffer

Gone are the days of fashion for this old working girl. Function/comfort have now replaced any other footwear criteria on the list of requirements when boot shopping. Of course, everyone has a list of criteria when shopping for footwear. They are all different. This list of requirements focuses on the woman who works outdoors, the woman on her feet eight to twelve hours a day, sometimes in adverse conditions whether inside or out. The list also takes into consideration that while we would still like to keep up some kind of appearances we need footwear to go from workplace to P.T.A. meetings in one fell swoop. It's not so much about latest trends but more classic, durable, quality footwear.

For winter this year, this working girl seeks out waterproof, insulated leather boots. Waterproof because walking to work and standing in soggy shoes and socks for eight hours a day is no fun. There's no time in the schedule to make shoe changes all day so basically a waterproof boot can eliminate that. Fear not ladies as the days of the old green gum boot are gone. Today's choices offer so much better than that. Insulation in a boot is also an important factor as you can only put on so many pairs of socks when you have to go out and spend hours shoveling snow. Leather is included in this list for the purpose of quality and foot care. Quality, well, you get what you pay for. Leather is more expensive but they will last longer under normal circumstances than those made of lesser quality materials. Also, in this household, feet seem to smell way worse after being pulled out of a pair of vinyl boots that require ten pairs of socks for warmth versus those pulled from a quality, insulated leather boot.

You will also see on this gal's list that most styles suggested represent some personal preferences as well as the three main requirements listed above. A nice soft foot bed is wonderful. Cushion can be a blessing if you're a factory gal standing on concrete all day long. Also, for those of us with the flat feet, some arch support is nice. And for those of us short on stature, a little heel is all we're asking. And for those of us who are a little bit lazy, a pull on boot is so nice. A pull on is also great for those gals who must make mad dashes in the middle of the night to the barn for the latest birthing. So, without further adieu, here is this years, 2011 Winter Working Girl Boot wish list for boots fit for use from barn stall to bake sale.
