The hotel is in a convenient location because it is along the main street that leads to downtown Venice. The public buses connect the hotel to downtown so it is quick and inexpensive to get to the main part of the city. From the bus stop across the street, a 15 minute ride will take you into the city for one euro. The hotel was well lit and I felt comfortable being in the area. Obviously, you should always use common sense while traveling, but I never felt as though I was in danger near the hotel.
The rooms in Hotel Marco Polo are larger than what you would find in hotels in the center of the city. They are also kept quite clean. The beds were comfortable and we were provided with clean sheets and towels each day.
The staff at the hotel were welcoming and always greeted us. We never had a problem communicating even though we know very little Italian. There was usually someone around who could speak English. The staff were knowledgeable about the local area and gave us some good suggestions of what to do during our stay.
I appreciated that the breakfast buffet was included with the price of the room. Although there is a restaurant right across the street, there is not much else around and you will be grateful to be able to get some food right at the hotel before you venture off in the morning. The food was plentiful and tasty so we usually didn't need to spend any more money on lunch.
Overall, I was very pleased with our stay at Hotel Marco Polo. When I travel, I prefer to spend my money on exploring and food rather than staying in fancy hotels. I feel you shouldn't be sitting around a hotel anyway when you're in a new city. While there is nothing exciting or fancy about the hotel, it is a clean, comfortable place to stay if you are traveling on a budget.
