Hotel Review: Aloft Soho Square in Birmingham, Alabama
Unique Ameneties and a Funky, Postmodern Vibe
Located at Soho Square, which is a host to trendy restaurants and shops, Aloft projects a vivid first impression with its exterior, featuring brightly colored, offset facades. A free parking garage is located at the back of the building and allows access to the hotel's lobby from inside the garage (green-minded guests are even rewarded with parking spaces near the door, designated for hybrid cars).
Guests are greeted with a warm "Aloha" from the attentive hotel staff members. The lobby features a neat industrial vibe, with barely-there floral arrangements offsetting the hard edges of the geometric furniture and fixtures (many of which are made from sustainable wood and cork--another nod to the environment). A mellow blue glow emanates from the bar in the lounge area, called "w xyz" (Aloft is a member of the Starwood hotel family, of which the W hotel brand is also a member.) A pool table allows for a friendly game between guests. Ambient music plays in the background. A giant digital information center volunteers information on local weather and nearby attractions with the touch of a screen, and news headlines scroll across a ticker along the top of the wall.
Just beyond the lobby, a "re:fuel" center offers food items to anyone needing a late-night snack or a quick breakfast or cup of coffee. Down the hall, an indoor pool and an exercise center are available for those seeking to work out or unwind.
In the guest rooms, minimalist--but plush--beds, wall-mounted flat-screen TVs, built-in desks, benches and tables, and carpeted walls make for an environment unlike that of traditional hotels. The funky, streamlined feel is a unique take on traveling light.
A ceiling-to-floor mirrored door slides open to reveal a completely glassed-in shower with in-shower product dispensers (part of Aloft's eco-sensitive initiative to use less and reuse more). The bathroom counter offers plenty of space, and an iron, ironing board, and in-room coffee, tea and water add to the convenience of this fresh atmosphere.
Additional perks make guests with unique needs feel at home at the 100% smoke-free Aloft. Pets are welcome and are even offered a package that include a dog bed and treats. And while Aloft undoubtedly caters more to the 20s-and-up crowd, it makes children feel at home with its available children's ameneties. Free wireless Internet is available throughout the entire hotel.
Aloft at Soho Square is an experience that must be had to understand and appreciate the special atmosphere that comes along with the hospitality that should be offered at any hotel. It is a unique, alternative environment that appeals to all senses and still makes guests feel at home.
