Hotel Room Security Tips in Vegas

Security is a growing concern in all facets of our life. Modern travellers these days also tend to have additional and sought after high worth items aside from the usual jewellery and wallet contents. There is the obligatory cell or mobile phone, laptops are more common than ever, digital music players, and the list goes on. The potential haul of personal digital gadgets on top of any jewellery and cash makes the prospect of thieving far more enticing to the brazen criminal element of society.

However as brazen as these thieves can be, they still operate on a strict risk versus reward basis.

Knowing this you are already forearmed. Thieves a unlikely to break into your hotel room and risk getting caught if they are unsure of the potential booty and they suspect there may be an alert individual in the room. Security is about opportunity, risk and reward. To secure your safety and the security of your room you need to do three things:

Minimise opportunity

Increase risk

Reduce reward

Minimising opportunity.
Be aware of fellow guests especially on your floor and when you are entering and leaving your room. Do not let them see into your room.

Keep your door with the dead bolt at all times. I do not, but my wife wisely does use hotel furniture where possible to jam against the door when alone in your hotel room.

Increase risk.
Invest in not only a personal alarm, but a door alarm. Fortunately you are able to get fantastic little battery operated motion detectors these days that really do the job. Although they are not very high tech the great thing about them is they can be put anywhere in your room and the intruder will be taken by surprise. They hate these kinds of surprises!

A blatantly obvious trick the traveller can use is to hang the "Do Not Disturb" sign from your door when away. Unless the burglar specifically know the room is empty this is going to create uncertainty and therefore heighten the risk in their mind.

You could go as far as leaving the TV or radio on, with the sound lowered but still faintly audible from outside your door. You are once again creating an illusion of your presence and heightening any intruder's risk. Where you can just use the radio. I dread leaving TVs on unattended for risk of fire and there is the whole aspect of wasting our precious energy resources.

Reduce Reward
Take only what you really do need. Can you make do with less jewellery, fewer gadgets or even just one credit card on this trip? If so and the worst does happen you have already minimised your loss.

It is your right to enjoy your trip and stay in Las Vegas. Be prepared, keep vigilant, but do enjoy your stay.
