While owned by Best Western, this is definitely not one of their typical chain structures. Located in historic Old City, The Independence Park Inn resides in a circa 1856 National Register of Historic Places edifice. It boasts high ceilings, 19th-century furnishings and décor with modern amenities, including cable TV and free internet. During our stay, the hotel staff was friendly and helpful and the rooms were spotless. Guests can enjoy free continental breakfast (or an upgrade for a small fee) in a glass-ceiling courtyard, or take afternoon tea in the Grand Parlor from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Wine and cheese was also offered one night. After a hectic day of sightseeing, guests can relax on the sofas by the lobby fireplace. Amenities include hairdryers, MP3 connections, irons and boards, satellite TV and free internet.

Two blocks from Independence Park, the Morris House Hotel offers the coziness of a bed and breakfast in a colonial setting, combined with modern amenities and luxuries. The hotel is located in a circa 1787 building, and listed on the National Historic Register. Fifteen deluxe rooms all have unique décors, beautiful hard wood floors and private baths, and the two luxury suites have sitting rooms. Most rooms have period furnishings and fireplaces. Guests are welcomed with Godiva demitasse chocolate squares, artesian Norwegian Voss water and fresh flowers. The Morris House Hotel's magnificent private garden, which can be seen from every room, provides guests a quiet respite. Amenities include bathrobes, hair dryers, clock radios and TV. Besides its closeness to the historical district, the Morris is a five to ten minutes walk from the theatre district and Philly's famed South Street. A continental breakfast of fresh whole fruits, cereal and locally baked pastries and breads is offered from 7:00 to 10:00 a.m. Tea and freshly baked cookies are offered every afternoon in the dining room, or guests may request in-room service. Another National Register of Historic Places circa 1769, the ambiance of colonial charm envelops the Thomas Bond House. The rooms and a parlor are all graced with Federal era-style fireplaces. The Bond House's 12 rooms feature meticulously restored furniture and authentic accessories. Two suites have whirlpool baths, and one suite has an adjoining room. Guests can relax in the evenings with game tables, complimentary cordials, wine and cheese. Weekday continental breakfasts offer freshly squeezed orange juice and freshly baked muffins, and full breakfasts are provided on weekends. Free internet and local telephone calls are also included and the innkeeper will happily make dinner or theater reservations for you. Due to the historic value of the building and the antiques, the Bond House does require that children be over age 10 and respectful of the surroundings.

If you're traveling with little ones and don't want to endanger priceless antiques, the Omni Hotel offers comfort and child-friendly surroundings. Less than a block from Independence National Historical Park, all 150 rooms overlook Independence Park, and guests are no more than a 10 minute walk to any Park historical site. Deluxe rooms and oversized suites feature imported marble baths, cable TV, feather pillows, plush robes and pool and spa/fitness center. The Omni Sensational Kids program delighted my grandchildren with a backpack, games and a book filled suitcase. The Omi also offers specially prepared kid-friendly menu choices, as well as a list of family oriented attractions, a first-aid kit, night light and outlet covers.
