Hotpoint Heavy Duty Extra-Large (Model VLSR1090GWW) Washer Review

We have a Hotpoint Heavy Duty Extra Large Two-Speed Washer in the basement of my apartment building, and let me tell you, even though this is an older model washing machine, it's simply great. If you are shopping washers, don't pass up the Hotpoint. The price ranges from about $50 - 150 for a used version of this machine, or $350 for the newer model. It comes with a one-year warranty on parts and labor, but don't worry, you won't need it.

This washer ain't pretty with its basic white exterior, but washers aren't meant to be pretty, and this top-loading washing machine is a beast. This washer is a real powerhouse: I can wash my queen-size sheets and comforter in the same load, or a week's worth of laundry at a time. For a busy professional, this is a great feature. This machine gets a lot of use: there are four apartments in our building, with 7 residents, so it runs almost constantly, but never gives us any grief. I do as many as five loads in one day, and it's never given me a single problem.

There's a disc for fabric softener at the top of the agitator, but I never use it. Instead, I put my fabric softener in a Downy ball, but that's a review for another day. This disc is nice though, because you can add the softener without having to wait for the rinse cycle. Isn't it annoying when you miss it, and your clothes come out stiff?

The only complaint I have is that it leaks if overloaded, but what washer doesn't? I've found that using the water level at a medium-high instead of high remedies any leakage.

The operating cost for this machine is about $32 a year, and it has a knob that allows the user to adjust the water levels. Also, it has different options depending on what you are washing (i.e. delicates), and allows you to change the temperature of the water with another knob. If you are looking for a dependable, reliable machine at an affordable price, this is the machine for you.
