House Bill 4274 Reviews Drinking Age

Representative Fletcher Smith has decided that perhaps if someone is old enough to fight the enemy for the United States Of America it's not to big of a stretch to assume that they are mature and responsible enough to indulge in some adult libations.

If House Bill 4274, becomes the law of the land in South Carolina anyone over the ago of 18 with Military Identification, could lawfully be served and purchase alcoholic beverages.

To me this idea makes good since, and I believe that the drinking age would never have been elevated in the first place had it not been for pressure from Federal Government who basically hold the states Highway Funds hostage in order to push the law through. They did this primarily due to Candy Lightner.

Candy Lightner's daughter was killed in an automobile accident, in 1980. Cari Lightner was 13 yrs old.

Candy in her grief began a crusade against alcohol use, abuse, and fatalities. She founded the grass roots organization Known as (MADD) Mothers Against Drunk Driving. This organization managed to curb drunk driving arrests and fatalities, by basically discriminating against, and stripping the rights of part of the adult population. They could just as easily accomplished this goal by passing a law prohibiting the sale of alcohol to blacks, women, or people between the ages of 25 and 30.

President Reagan first threatened to Veto the bill and then was swayed to pass it due to political pressure.

The law was challenged and upheld by the Supreme Court. Justice O'Connor voted against it but was over-ruled.

Weather or not the law is Constitutional, I don't think it's appropriate for the Feds to threaten to withhold funds from a state that does not pass the laws that are enacted on a Federal level. This AC producer believes that States should have the Freedom to govern themselves in all areas that do not effect National Security.

This AC producer agrees with Representative Smith that someone who is mature and responsible enough to fight for our Country should be afforded all of the rights and duties that are afforded to every other adult in this great Nation.

I want to encourage every reader of this article to contact Representative Fletcher via telephone or email at this link and thank him for taking a stand for our Soldiers and youth.

Unfortunately, this law could be viewed as discriminatory. However, if a service member chose to show his ID on say, an AFB, Army Post, Navy Base, etc. and received his libation on Base, I think that would be fine since really, civilians are guests of Base and not really entitled to many privileges (like shopping at P/X, etc.)

Great summarization! As a former AF airman, I knew plenty of folks dabbling in underage drinking, that were eventually punished. I can honestly say that they weren't any more reckless than us over 21 binge-drinkers.
