House Foods Tofu Shirataki Noodles: My Miracle Diet Food

A Review of the Light Pasta from House Foods

Cassie Schmelz
Most dieters know that pasta is a forbidden food due to its high percentage of calories and carbohydrates. Top your noodles off with a fattening sauce, and you've got a dieter's downfall. Fortunately, there's a great pasta substitute with House Foods Tofu Shirataki Noodles. These noodles are low calorie, low carb, low fat, and wheat, gluten, and dairy free. Tofu Shirataki Noodles are delicious when prepared correctly and are sure to help you succeed on your diet by satisfying your craving for pasta.

Tofu Shirataki Noodles are made from blending soybeans and the root of the konnyaku (a member of the yam family) and have only 40 calories, 1 gram of fat, and 3 grams of carbohydrates per 8 ounces (which is a good sized serving). Compared to regular noodles with 800 calories, 4 grams of fat and 168 grams of carbs for 8 dry ounces, Tofu Shirataki Noodles are an excellent noodle substitute for dieters.

Since they sound too good to be true, you're probably wondering how much Tofu Shirataki Noodles cost. While they are understandably more expensive than regular pasta, they won't break the bank too bad. Tofu Shirataki Noodles actually only cost around $2.00 per bag (if you buy 10 bags), not including shipping. They come infettuccine, spaghetti, and angel hair shape.

Unfortunately, they're not yet widely available at your regular grocery store. you can check out the House Foods website to see what stores they are offered in. I ordered mine from LoCarbU here.

I first heard about these noodles from the Hungry Girl website. They have great tips for preparing Tofu Shirataki Noodles as well as a ton of recipes. If you decide to try Tofu Shirataki Noodles, I recommend you check out Hungry Girl.

My favorite way to prepare Tofu Shirataki Noodles is by first preparing them according to package instructions, then putting them in a bowl with two wedges of Light Laughing Cow Cheese. I put the bowl in the microwave for one minute, then add salt and pepper and stir. The result is delicious noodles with a creamy alfredo like sauce. You can prepare Tofu Shirataki with almost any sauce you like, though.

Although Tofu Shirataki Noodles aren't for everybody, they're certainly for me. I would say that I eat them at least once a week to fulfill my pasta cravings. So, if you're tired of being banned from pasta on a low carb diet, help is here in the form of House Foods Tofu Shirataki Noodles.
