House of Kabob: A Taste of Greece in Maryland

Amanda Lay
As a Southerner, food is definitely my love currency. Not only do I enjoy cooking for the people that I love, I take full advantage of every chance that I get to eat out with my friends, family and loved ones. With a sister and brother in-law in New York, a brother in DC and a brother in Richmond, these days eating out and being together is an extra special occasion for my family. During a recent trip home for the weekend, my brother suggested we go out to eat. Being adventurous and a lover of new foods, my brother recommended, "House Of Kabob," in Rockville, Maryland.

What a terrific recommendation it was! A small, family-owned, restaurant, "House Of Kabob" is truly a well-kept secret. When we dined on a recent Sunday afternoon, the restaurant was packed with a crowd as diverse as the Washington DC area itself. Greek instrumental music filled the air as we nibbled on an appetizer of homemade, freshly-baked, pita bread which was accompanied by our choice of either butter or cream cheese.

"House Of Kabob" specialized in homemade Greek cuisine that was made to order. Each delicious entrée was family-sized and contained enough food for two meals. I ordered a combination plate, which consisted of a Grilled Chicken Kabob, a Beef Kabob, a generous portion of Greek Basmati Rice, Grilled Onion and a Grilled Tomato. My younger brother also ordered a combination plate. Stepping out and taking a different direction, my youngest brother ordered a shish kabob plate. My brother's meal consisted of a Beef Shish Kabob, a variety of grilled vegetables, and a generous portion of Greek Basmati Rice. A variety of wonderful desserts were also available. We were just too full to risk ordering dessert!

In recent weeks, I have dined out with friends at a chain restaurant. However, I was much more pleased with the service that my brothers and I received during our experience at, "House Of Kabob" than the service at the chain restaurant. While dining at, "House Of Kabob," my brothers and I found our server to be polite, respectful, and attentive to our needs. Our server was so attentive that we did not even need to ask for a single refill on our drinks. Our drinks were refilled like clockwork. Chatting with the regulars, servers made patrons feel like part of the family!

Do you feel like, "going Greek" in your own backyard? The next time you have a taste for authentic Greek cuisine in a family atmosphere at a reasonable price, I recommend, "House Of Kabob" in Rockville. "House Of Kabob" offers patrons the authentic flavors of Greece without the long and expensive trip.

I have to agree with Deonils. Greek Basmati rice does sound odd, as Basmati rice is essentially Indian rather than Greek. Your review was very good. Proper homemade Greek food is the best though.
