House MD Season 4 Review

Jason Freeden
The past three seasons of House have all been terrific. We have witnessed an ignorant multi-millionaire who wanted House gone from the start, Foreman almost dying, a detective who is out to punish House for being ignorant to other patient's, and much more. But this season certainly brought on a different approach, and a lot of people were concerned after the season finale of the third season. House's team is gone, and he is all alone, could he do it all by himself?

The first episode of the new season started off with a bang in my opinion. Now, like always, House starts off with a 'cold open' outside of the hospital, which then show what House must try and diagnose. In the episode "Alone", a building collapses, and there is a young girl stuck inside, Megan, who survived the disaster. But underneath all of the drama, there is a mystery that must be solved, and it's very possible that Megan really isn't Megan, and the boyfriend and mother are completely befuddled. House, being without he team, makes a deal with Cuddy. If House can solve the case without a team, Cuddy would leave House alone for a week, and also prove to her that he does not need a team. Well, House finds a janitor, and he bounces his ideas (the ideas he normally would bounce off of Foreman, Chase and Cameron) off of him. I must say that this episode was hilarious, and obviously House needed to get to the hiring part eventually.

This is where the season picked up in intensity. If any of you have ever seen the reality television show "Survivor", you will know what I am talking about. House started off with 40 doctors, who would all be competing for a spot on House's team. Each week, a new catch would be brought up, and House would elimating either a whole row of doctors, or one, depending on which show we are talking about. Eventually we get down to 10 doctors in the episode "97 Seconds", and this episode is very interesting. Foreman is leading a medical team at New York Mercy, but is acting a lot like House, meanwhile back in Princeton, House and his team of 10 fellows are trying to figure out what's wrong with a wheelchair-bound man with spinal muscular atrophy, who is slowly suffocating. House enters an exam room in the clinic, only to find a nutcase who pulls out a knife to stick into an electrical outlet, hence the name "97 Seconds" (you will find out why it is exactly called 97 Seconds once you have seen the episode).

Eventually, as was assumed, House picks off a different fellow each week, which ordinarily leaves House with four candidates. During the episode "Games", Cuddy orders House to hire two doctors, but House wants three. So during the entire episode, House plays Cuddy for a fool, and eventually gets his wish. I will not go any further to what happens in the episode, but if you haven't seen it yet, be sure to do so. How House manipulated his way into getting what he wanted was brilliant, and surely one of the best episodes to date.

Foreman has returned to the team, as he is assigned to oversee House's candidates, once the games are over, he begins to help out by doing what he used to do in the previous three seasons, help out House by diagnosing patients. Eventually we see the whole old team, as Chase and Cameron are currently working in the Hospital in their own departments. Now, we don't only have House with a new team, plus Foreman, but everyone makes appearances normally in every episode, so it's like one big party. I suppose we had to know something like this would happen.

As of today, we are currently up to the episode "Living the Dream", which will air on May 5th, 2008, and if I remember correctly, House has told Cuddy at the end of one of the episodes that the games aren't over yet, so I still think something very big is going to happen. Tune into Fox, and witness this great shows fourth season unravel.

  • At the beginning of Season Four, House is all alone, without his team of doctors.
  • House starts up a "Survivor" like game, so he could hire his new team the way he likes it.
