House Season 6 Premier Recap and Predictions

Review of the FOX Season Premier of House

Wendy Dawn
We return to House finding Dr. Gregory House right where we left him, in the Mayfield Mental Health Institute. For a while, House, resorts to behaviors we expect of him to stir up trouble with the other patients, work over the staff and doctors, and pretend to get along just to get his way.

A call to his best friend, Dr. Wilson, discourages him because Wilson refuses to help him blackmail the hospital doctor in order to get papers releasing Dr. House to return to practicing medicine. While House admitted himself, it is pointless for him to leave the facility without the paperwork he needs to return to solving medical mysteries with his elite team.

Typical of House, he interferes in the treatment of a delusional patient. Rather than joining the facility doctors and clinicians in convincing the young man he is not living in reality, House helps him escape and fulfill a small piece of his super power dreams.

Before he can make it back to the hospital the patient uses his perceived powers to jump from a parking deck suffering near life threatening injuries.

Following this incident, House decides to really cooperate and seek help. He finally admits he has a problem and agrees to work with the doctors. He admits begins to see that his hallucinations may not have been entirely a result of Vicodin abuse, but deeper issues with which he must battle and which he must untangle.

Among the complexities which Dr. Gregory House will have to combat and which we can expect to see woven into the storyline is his inability to forgive himself for failure, his inability to trust people, and the recent loss of Taub, Amber, and his own father. House must also overcome his cynicism, sarcasm, and fear to really connect with people.

Once the new season of House further plays out I expect to watch House further grapple with his own emotional and psychological problems, without losing the wit and cynicism that makes him house.

One of the biggest fears House will have to face, once he returns to the hospital, is the possible stigmatization associated with a stay in a mental health facility. I'm guessing he will have more of a problem accepting his need for hospitalization. He will be the one to accuse his associates of jumping to conclusions about his mental stability and, worst of all in the case of Dr. Gregory House, mental capacities.

This season, rather than being filled with the drama of House's constant bickering and personal problems, will feature his personal interactions with his colleagues to re-discover himself.

A large part of House's personal discovery and rehabilitation will likely occur when he is allowed to once again lead his team of diagnostic physicians. So much of who he is, in his own perspective, depends on his success as a doctor. This was proven with when the psychiatrist from the hospital called House to come to his side when determining a life or death medical decision for his father.

In order to see House's personal growth, it wouldn't surprise me if he didn't actually lose a patient during this season. That is mere speculation, but it would work well into the storyline.

We actually saw House exhibit a tender side of himself on the season premier and suffer heartbreak. Will this set him back? Will he lose the trust the psychiatrist has helped him work so hard to develop?

Does the character Dr. Gregory House or House or the wildly popular FOX medical drama have more changes in store this season?

Despite a setting outside the norm, FOX's House season premier was provocative and evocative. I even found it moving.
