A taxi comes for Nina (Nathalia Ramos) as soon as she gets off the train. She's surprised when the driver pegs her as American but assumes her accent gave her away. When he points out the huge U.S. flag sticker on her suitcase, she promptly removes it in an effort to blend in.
In the taxi, Nina gets a text from her grandmother. She explains to the driver that she had been living with her grandmother since her parents died years before. This is the first time she's ever been away from home. She's not homesick, though; she's psyched about attending boarding school in the land of Harry Potter. She checks the info the school sent her and says that she's been assigned to the House of Anubis.
As the cab approaches the school, some students are goofing off on the school grounds. Patricia (Jade Ramsey) is taking photos of Joy (Klariza Clayton) with her cell phone. Joy backs up and falls to the ground next to Fabian (Brad Kavanagh). They all notice the cab's arrival and stare.
The taxi driver gets out, and Nina follows. Enthralled by the building, she welcomes herself to Hogwarts but then realizes she has to run to catch up with the driver. Unfortunately, she makes a bad first impression by colliding with Patricia. The teens stand around wondering who the American is. Patricia isn't impressed, but Fabian seems to be.
Nina catches up with the driver, who has dropped off her suitcase in front of the Anubis House. She pays him, braces herself, and starts to knock on the door, but it opens mysteriously. She calls out tentatively and enters.
Between classes, Jerome (Eugene Simon) is scamming money from a younger kid. Alfie (Alex Sawyer) has a crush on Amber (Ana Ten Voy), and he thinks he has the perfect plan to get her attention. Jerome isn't impressed when Alfie extends a fake hand. "Subtle," he says sarcastically. Alfie asks, "Why would anyone want to be subtle?" He just doesn't get it.
Nina slowly makes her way inside, past the front entrance. The door closes loudly behind her. She turns around to look, and when she turns back around, Victor (Francis Magee) is standing in front of her. He demands to know whether the bell was broken. She explains that the door was open and she just went inside. Victor isn't impressed.
While Victor complains about Nina's arrival two weeks into the term, she says that the letter about her scholarship arrived late. He doesn't care. The housemother, Trudy (Mina Anwar), appears. Unlike Victor, she's friendly and welcoming.
In French class, Amber is on the phone with her father, trying to get him to extend her credit limit so she can buy an expensive pair of shoes. She hangs up when Mick (Bobby Lockwood), her boyfriend, arrives. Mrs. Andrews (Julia Deakin) wishes he'd changed clothes before class; he's sweaty from a game. Amber thinks he's very hot, but her friend Mara (Tasie Dhanraj) won't say much even though she obviously agrees.
Trudy and Victor show Nina around Anubis House, and Victor talks about the building's history. The original estate was built in 1890, but the house wasn't named Anubis until 1922. Nina notices a portrait and learns that it's of Mr. and Mrs. Frobisher-Smythe, the original inhabitants. They died tragically, Victor says and plays an ominous chord on the piano.
When Nina stops in front of a group picture, Victor promptly removes it from the wall. He soon places it on his desk and tells her that his office is off limits. He lays out the other house rules: no one is allowed to go into the attic or the cellar, everyone must be in their rooms by 9:00pm, and lights are to be out by 10:00pm. The girls' rooms are upstairs, with the boys living downstairs.
Back in class, Mrs. Andrews is about to administer a practice test. It's 2:06pm, and the students will have an hour to complete the test. Alfie fakes a major nosebleed to get out of it. As he leaves, Mr. Sweet (Paul Antony-Barber) arrives and says that someone is waiting for Joy in the office. As Joy heads out, Mr. Sweet and Mrs. Andrews exchange a conspiratorial look.
In her new room, Nina finds a photo of Joy and Patricia. When she asks about it, Victor takes it from her and throws it away. Trudy says that Joy left suddenly--too suddenly, if she may say so. Victor tells her that she may not!
Mr. Sweet leads Joy to a dark vehicle. Joy clearly doesn't want to go, but someone inside the vehicle takes her hand. As they drive away, Mr. Sweet looks troubled.
Victor is on the phone asking whether it's "done." He's pleased to hear that it is. He and Corbiere, his stuffed raven, will make sure "her" friends are no problem.
Alfie and Jerome are clowning around in the hall. Patricia asks whether they've seen Joy, and Jerome thinks she should check the house.
Patricia finds Nina in her room and starts to get hysterical. While Nina introduces herself as her new American roommate, Patricia demands to know where Joy's things are. She finds the photo in the trash and then starts tossing Nina's things out in the hall. Finding Joy's phone, she accuses Nina of stealing it. Then she finds Joy's stuffed animal. She knows that Joy wouldn't have left without her things. She demands to know what Nina has done with Joy!
