House: A Truly Original Television Drama

Stacy J. Day
I have always been a fan of the show House, and I'm sure it will be popular for years to come. One thing that amazes me is that Hugh Laurie (House) actually has an English accent but speaks without it on the show. What makes the show House different from every other medical drama on television-including some of my other favorites, is the fact that House is a complete and utter idiot ( I won't use the word that I'm really thinking but I'm sure you can use your imagination). Sure, other medical and/or hospital dramas have characters who aren't as "nice" as others, but Gregory House takes being not-so-nice to the extreme. He's rude, insulting, childish, peculiar, yet extremely brilliant. His brilliance is why patients, staff and family members choose to deal with him despite his negative disposition. House behaves the way he does because he is miserable-his leg hurts him all the time and he's addicted to Vicodin, making him very cantankerous and somewhat needy.

I remember the episode when House totally humiliated the police officer during an examination. Of course House wasn't aware that this man was a police officer prior to the examination-or prior to the living hell that the officer put House through for treating him so horribly , but knowing House, had he known the man was a police officer before the exam, he wouldn't have cared. He would have still been his same, idiotic self. He really can't help it, though, because he's House. His attitude, as preposterous and as extreme as it may be, is really and truly what makes this show unique, making it stand out in contrast to similar dramas.

I thoroughly enjoy watching House because this show airs episodes with some very distinctive medical conditions. Many viewers may be suffering from the same symptoms that the patients are on the show are, possibly leading them toward a proper diagnosis. I must admit that I've also learned a great deal about medical conditions that I previously had no knowledge about, which to me is very exciting. I love to learn as much as I can about everything and what better way to learn than to do it while simultaneously watching an exciting television drama? I'm going to continue to watch House behave like a complete imbecile for as long as new episodes are made, and hopefully you will be too. If you don't plan to watch House, you may want to reconsider because this is the most unique and entertaining medical drama that has ever been on television.
