Household Tips to Make Your Life Easier

Kristie Sweet
The hectic pace of daily life shows no sign of slowing for most of us, and when housework and other daily chores are added on, little time is left for family or fun. However, applying just a few easy tips to your day can help alleviate some of the stress and maybe even give you some more time to spend on things you'd like to do rather than things you have to do.

For instance, many of us do the household laundry, even if we have housecleaners that come in once a week. Instead of filling a basket with clean clothes and folding them elsewhere, take your hangers to the dryer and hang the clothes as you take them out; you may save yourself a step. Folding them at the dryer and then hanging them later takes more time. You can get an extra bonus if you fold someone else's clothes that then don't typically get put away carefully; hanging immediately certainly cuts down on wrinkles.

A second tip suggests it isn't always how you clean that makes a difference but where you keep the supplies. Keeping a full set of supplies including rags or paper towels in each bathroom can save some time and trouble. Whatever you need to clean the bath is right at your fingertips. Quick surface cleanings or small messes are easily taken care of without even leaving the room. This idea can be particularly helpful if you have baths on different floors; hauling bottles, cans, sponges and brushes just isn't necessary.

Another area people hate to spend time on is kitchen cleaning, especially after dinner. You can save yourself headache on the cleanup with a little forethought. After putting a dish you have cooked on the stovetop into a serving bowl, fill the saucepan with water and put it back on the warm burner. You don't need to leave the burner on; the heat as it cools should conduct enough to allow the pan to steep in warm water while you eat.

Any kind of pan will come clean faster and easier with the use of cooking spray. Unless you are using a recipe that specifically prohibits any kind of grease, pan spray helps prevent sticking and adds practically no calories or taste to your recipes. We spray everything from loaf pans to pizza pans. That includes our outdoor grill, also.

You can even use pan spray to lengthen the life of your plastic containers like Tupperware. Tomato-based foods like spaghetti sauce will stain clear plastic, but if you spray the inside of the container with no-stick spray first, you will have a container that says cleaner longer.

Probably the biggest mess in the kitchen belongs with the stove, and pan spray isn't enough to prevent messes here. What is enough, however, is aluminum foil. Place a sheet of heavy duty foil in the bottom of the oven, and overflow from pies and casseroles is easy to clean up-just pull out the sheet and put another in.

These are all small tips that save a little time and effort, but in my house, a little time and effort saved gives me more time to spend on the things I find more important.
