Local Events to Celebrate Bike to Work Week - National Bike Month - Bike to Work Day in Houston, Texas

Houston has several large events going on to celebrate Bike to Work Day 2009. Across the whole state of Texas, there are many biking events to celebrate National Bike Month. For events state-wide in Texas, www.texbiker.net is a great resource to check out.

Bike Ride to City Hall with Mayor White - on the official Bike to Work Day May 15, 2009, Mayor White and participating cyclists will start at Memorial Park and end at City Hall in Houston. At 7:00am bike riders should meet at 7:00am at South Picnic Loop. The ride will start promptly at 7:30am. There will be a press conference following the ride and also refreshments provided by Corner Bakery Cafe. For additional information, contact (713) 837-0003 or email rita.balchus@cityofhouston.net

www.Houstonbikeways.org will be providing Houston bike maps online and the public libraries, Houston Downtown Visitor Center, and participating bike shops will also have bike maps for citizens to pick up.

On May 2, 2009, Saturday, from 10am to 12pm at Eldridge and Enclave the West Houston Trail is opening.

On May 3, 2009, Sunday, the American Red Cross Tour de Rouge begins. There are two options to participate. The is a one day option is from Humble to Beaumont, for those who cannot participate in the event which starts in Texas and ends in Louisiana. For the one day trip, there is a registration fee of $65 and a return trip fee of $25, the participant must be at least 15 years old. For the full event, registration is $100 and the rider must raise a minimum of $2500. Registration closes for both events on April 24, 2009.

On May 14, 2009, Thursday, there will be a Energy Corridor Bike To Work Breakfast from 7am to 8am at Terry Hershey Park Gazebo.

On May 20, 2009, Wednesday, from 7 pm to 9pm the Ride of Silence at Hermann Park/Zoo Parking Lot will be taking place to help raise awareness to motorists about the importance of sharing roads with bike riders and cyclists.

On May 21, 2009, Thursday, from 8am to 9am will be the Westchase Bike To Work Day a the Kolache Factory located at 10455 Briar Forest Dr in Houston, Texas. On May 24, 2009, Sunday, the Tour de Hood in Houston, Texas will be from 7am to 2pm. The 1st Annual Tour de Hood is a 26 mile journey through Houston's 6 historical wards. This will be a great experience for tourists or citizens to view Houston in a more personal way. Pre-registration is available until April 30, 2009 and participants will pay $30 until the day of the event to register.

Don't forget that it is possible to bike into Houston and then put your bike on a bus. There is a bus schedule available at METRO Bus Schedules and also directions for how to load your bike on the bus too at Bikes on Buses. Houston, Texas offers a lot of options for participating in Bike to Work Day, Bike to Work Week, and National Bike Month. If you don't have a job, you can bike a trail or bike with your children to to their schools. And if you don't own a bike, then you can support the Bike to Work Day by walking instead of commuting. There is a way for everyone to participate in Bike to Work Day with a little planning and effort.
