Houston in the Summer: Heat and Budget Friendly Things to Do

Ideas that Houston Inner Loop Residents and Visitors Will Enjoy

Elizabeth Reed
Unseasonably warm weather in the south has made us think it's already spring even though it isn't, and Houstonians and visitors alike are already looking for things to do that are heat friendly. Though Houston and Texas have many water parks and more "typical" heat escapes, inner-loop Houston residents will appreciate some inexpensive indoor and outdoor places to escape the heat that are a little closer to home.

The Houston Galleria is one of America 's largest malls. Bring some tennis shoes and walk the mall for a cool break from the heat, bring your wallet to drop some cash, or bring your ice skates to "tour" the large indoor ice rink.

Right across from the Galleria is the Water Wall. A large glorified fountain, the Water Wall is a meeting place, and is often a backdrop for prom and wedding pictures. When it's warm during the day, bring a picnic and a blanket to enjoy the dusk hours.

Houston is famous for its hip and extensive museum scene. One of the city's best, and cheapest (free!) museums is The Menil Collection. With several permanent halls as well as rotating exhibits, The Menil complex is a great place to spend a weekend afternoon. On the grounds are several other attractions: The Rothko Chapel and the Byzantine Fresco Chapel Museum. Both are free, air conditioned, and will add a great degree of culture to your Menil visitation experience. Added bonus: parking is free!

Another museum that's free and worth checking out is the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston. Located in Houston 's Museum District, this museum has some interesting contemporary art and is home to the Hugh Roy Cullen Sculpture Garden (outside, but worth a visit).

Behind New York City , Houston has the most theater seats per capita of any city in the country! Visit one of Houston 's extraordinary theaters or concert halls. During the spring and summer months, check out the Miller Outdoor Theatre, which is part of Hermann Park . The Outdoor Theatre offers free shows, so all you need to bring is a blanket to enjoy the show!

If you're looking for a place to work out, look no further than Memorial Park. One of Houston 's best large parks, go in the early morning or at dusk to enjoy a nice breeze under the trees that shade the miles of jogging paths.
