Houston has seen an increase in crime, especially since the devastation of Katrina on the coast a couple of years ago. It dislocated many people, increased the city's population of indigent people and contributed to the racial tensions that had been on the mend. With the added stress of illegal alien populations and criminal elements from local and international gangs, people are becoming more fearful of walking the streets in many of our major cities. Car-jacking is another fear. With so much going on these days it's no wonder that folks are increasingly looking for place to teach them self-defense techniques of all sorts. It's ironic but it makes sense that in cities like Houston that have the higher crime rates, there are also more resources for fighting back against it.

The Shobu Aikido Houston teaches Aikido, which means the study of wisdom. The principles behind this disciplined training serve to guide a person to self-awareness and self-control for the protection of self and others in society. They teach with empty hand and with weapons, but the focus is always on a refined mental state that is able to harmonize with the universe and fend off attack and disharmony. This type of oriental philosophy will be evident in any of the martial arts training centers, but each has its own emphasis and techniques. In its most perfect form Aikido is "meditation in Motion," thus their insistence on this aspect of all the training. Their basic beginner's class is five weeks and those opting for more training will learn more advanced skills according to their level reached. They also offer two-hour intensive seminars as well as private classes with senior instructors. Contact them or stop in and look around their center to see if it's for you.

Houston Kung Fu Academy teaches a vast array of martial arts training to students at the beginning levels all the way to training for competition or to become instructors. What they offer that's nice is a session of free training which people can inquire about by calling (281) 757-9862. They specifically train groups based on age, attention span and developmental abilities, so this distinguishes them from many other martial arts schools. They start training children as young at 4 years of age. They train children and older people to learn how to stand up for themselves, and to attain true self-confidence based on inner harmony and peace. Another focus of their training which is unique is their emphasis on the importance of "instantaneous recognition of the right tool at right time and right place with the right energy." In other words, they teach how to recognize the right defense based on your abilities and the situation that threatens you. They train self-defense for real world situations. This school would be perfect for those working in dangerous sections of town or those who are in professions like law enforcement or collections, where they may be more exposed to public hostility.

On May 26, this year, there will be a seminar in women's self-defense hosted by the Yoga Lotus at the Westheimer Rd., Ste. 380 studio. This is really a great opportunity for all Houston women to learn some vital techniques and strategies of basic self-defense and not just one particular martial art. It costs $35 if paid by May 18, and $40 if paid at the door, but there will be a crowd so sign up as early as possible to get your spot reserved. Themes taught will be verbal actions that are most effective in warding off an attack, methods of making yourself safer in parking lots and other public areas, and possible weapons on hand and how to most effectively use them. Payment can be mailed immediately to their local Houston address. Nobody should miss this class if they have a chance to attend.
