Houston's Most Popular Dog

Why the Labrador Retriever is Top Dog in Houston, Texas

Bobbi Leder
Houston, Texas is known for being a dog-friendly city but do you know which dogs are Houston's most popular?

It should come as no surprise that the most popular dog in Houston is the Labrador Retriever (according to the American Kennel Club). Labs are family-friendly, fun, and hardy. They are great swimmers and are easy to house train. Labs are originally from Newfoundland, Canada and come in three colors: yellow, chocolate and black. They make great hunters because of their retrieving abilities; and Labs are often used as service dogs due to their intelligence and willingness to please.

Males weigh between 65 to 80 pounds, while females weigh between 55 to 70 pounds. Labrador Retrievers require a lot of exercise so a kiddy pool in the backyard is your best bet during Houston's hot and humid summers. Labs are low maintenance but do shed seasonally. One of the most famous Labrador Retrievers is "Old Yeller" from the 1957 movie of the same name.

Labs are gentle giants. Gotta love them!

Labs are too boisterous for me... I like dogs that are more aloof and who do not chew everything in sight!

Very interesting I watch animal control Houston and they are always bringing in the pit-bulls. I would have thought that would be the top dog.

I don't like big dogs but I think if I ever got one it would be a lab :)
