How to Make 3D Glasses for the Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert

How You Can Buy Them or Create Homemade Versions

Jan Corn
The Hannah Montana movie, is ready to hit Starz on Demand soon as well as the Disney Channel. This could be just the start of many showings to come on the small screen. When the film, Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert, was shown in theaters, there were special 3D glasses. Trouble is, you might have a hard time finding them now.

Not to worry, though. You can either buy them or make some of your own. If you really want to buy them, try your local Walmart store. But if you are at home and the movie is about to start, you may not have time to run to your local Walmart for Hannah Montana 3-D glasses. Don't worry. They aren't hard to make.

Here's the instructions for two versions:

How to make 3D glasses for Hannah Montana's Best of Both Worlds Concert: follow the directions at Starz on Demand

If you are going to follow this option, you'll need poster board and regular paper, blue and red plastic markers, plastic wrap and other supplies listed at the Starz on Demand website here: www.starz.com/appmanager/seg/s You can simply follow the directions for 3-D glasses, conveniently explained and shown in a very cool little film. You can download and print out a template for the glasses. That makes things very simple! You can then decorate the glasses however you want.
You'll then end up with some rather rectangular 3-dimensional glasses with squares of red and blue lenses. Don't forget that special guests will be the Jonas Brothers.

How to make 3D eyeglasses for Hannah Montana's Best of Both Worlds Concert: start with a pair of old sunglasses or inexpensive eyeglasses

Although I prefer the Starz version a bit better, this also works well. To make the 3-D glasses, simply take a pair of sunglasses. I find plastic ones easiest to deal with and it is safer to pop out the lenses or simply color over them. You'll still need red and blue markers, nothing too opaque, as well as plastic, like transparency sheets, that are firm enough to fit the glasses but still pliable.

Use the old lenses and trace around them on the plastic. You are creating new, clear ones to insert in the old glasses. Cut them out with good scissors or an x-actor knife. Then color one lens red and the other blue. Be sure to put the blue square on the left eye and the red square on the right eye. I don't know why this makes a difference but it definitely does! The benefit of this method is that you can start with eyeglasses which have sizes and shapes you prefer. You aren't limited to a particular template.

Where to use your 3D glasses when you can watch the Hannah Montana Best of Both Worlds Concert, including the Jonas Brothers

Any large screen television would be ideal for catching the concert. You can find it on Starz in both standard and high definition versions, starting July 26. It will also begin showing on Starz on Demand and Starz HD on Sunday, July 27. Disney Channel will start showing the movie on July 26 (8 pm EDT) . Finally, if you want to wait for the home video or DVD version, you can find that on Aug 19.

How to find out more about the Hannah Montana movie while you are starting to make your 3-D glasses

Simply go to the Starz website (listed above) or disney.go.com/index Disney's site. You'll find plenty to get you in the spirit for the movie, including a film called Hannah Montana on Starz which shows Hannah (Miley) in concert. With her characteristic zest , she is shown performing and even puts on a pair of the glasses at the end of the brief video clip. Also featured? A Hannah Montana preview, with some young fans featured, as well as the Jonas Brothers.

Why are 3D glasses popular again?

I remember using them years ago so it was a bit amusing to find that they may actually be back in style again. None other than Jeffrey Katzenberg, head of Dreamworks Animation, seems to be a fan of 3D. However, the old 3D glasses were far different than the ones out there today. The new ones come in two versions: Dolby Laboratories types as well as Real D glasses. In general, viewers can keep the Real D glasses but have to return the more expensive Dolby ones (they are specially cleaned and reused). Both work essentially the same, though.

3D discs are being made and television screens are also being equipped. This just goes to show that what was old may very well be new and trendy yet again, especially with the success of the Hannah Montana movie. In 2009, you can expect to find even more 3D films, from Monsters vs. Aliens to a filmed edition of Tintin (am I the only one that actually recalls this book and comic editions as well?).

In the meantime, have fun as you make and use your 3D glasses and prepare to rock with Hannah Montana.
