Unfortunately this is not the case. Many are noticing that when the event invitation email is opened via mail on the iPhone the link that you are supposed to click to confirm acceptance is grayed out and not click-able. I have done some research and messed around with the iPhone to try figuring this out.
Turns out as of right now this functionality is unsupported according to many experts on the web. I am sure future updates will include this feature but right now the iPhone just isn't able to do that.
Fortunately, you can still confirm the invitation, have the event added to a calendar and even set up email alerts for your phone if you are a Gmail user that uses Google calendar and Gmail under the same user name. Here is how to do it:
1. All you have to do is sign in to Google calendar (http://www.Google.com/calendar/)
2. Access your google calendar settings
3. Select mobile phone setup under calendar settings
4. Enter the phone number and carrier for your iPhone
5. Click "send verification code"
6. When verification code arrives on your iPhone enter it on the mobile phone setup page
7. Save your settings
8. Once you have verified your phone on Google calendar and saved your settings you can now follow the link that came with the verification code on your iPhone
9. Bookmark this page on your iPhone
10. When using both Gmail and Google calendar under the same user name you'll notice that the sent invitation will show up automatically on the calendar page you just opened. All you need to do is accept the invitation now via Google calendar that you are accessing on the web with you iPhone.
