How to Access Yahoo Mail on Kindle

The Amazon Kindle, an E Ink display E-book reader, offers free 3G WiFi to its users. This is typically utilized only for purchasing books in the Kindle store. However, using the experimental browser provided by Amazon, you can check your Yahoo and other email accounts, in addition to surfing the web, from anywhere your Kindle gets a signal. In fact, the browser allows you to do many of the same things you can on your computer. Just keep in mind that the browser is optimized for web pages with heavy text and may not be able to handle graphically intense pages at all.

Many users might have already tried to access their Yahoo email from the experimental browser only to find that the Amazon Kindle's browser is not supported by Yahoo at this time. Luckily, I discovered a workaround using Yahoo's website for mobile devices.

How to Access Yahoo Mail on Amazon Kindle

From your home page, press the menu button and select "Experimental." Select "Launch browser" in the basic web section. Use the directional pad to select the URL text entry area. Type "m.yahoo.com" and then push in the directional button or hit enter (represented by the arrow below the delete key).

When the web page finishes loading, use the directional button to select the top link, which is "Mail," and click in on the directional button.

When prompted, enter your Yahoo ID and password. Note that you can use the "SYM" key to enter special characters such as the "@ symbol.

Once your Inbox has loaded, press the menu button and select "Bookmark This Page." This will make accessing your Yahoo email account much quicker from this point forward. To access bookmarks later, while in the browser (Experimental, Launch browser), press the menu button and select "Bookmarks" to bring up your "Bookmarks List," including Yahoo mail.

You may have noticed that your Yahoo email display is oddly configured on your screen. If this is the case, press the menu button and select "Use Advanced Mode." Press the menu button again, then select "Settings," then "Enable Javascript." Here you can also disable images, which will give you a speed boost when loading web pages. You can also clear your cache, history or cookies.

How to Delete Bookmarks in Kindle's Experimental Browser

While in your "Bookmarks List," underline the bookmark you wish to remove and press left on the directional button. When "delete bookmark" displays by the bookmark, click in on the directional button to delete it.

I followed those steps. I get a "browser not supported" screen from yahoo mail. A few minutes with an Amazon Kindle chat confirmed that the Kindle DX browser is no longer supported and she bumped the problem to developers. Sine the DX browser is a couple years old and "experimental", there is a good chance they will not update it.

Eventually there will be no place on earth we can't be plugged in! Great, knowledgeable article.
