The first thing that you need to do is to assess your life and your goals. If you do not like the job that you are doing or want to achieve a different goal then try looking for a less stressful job somewhere else. It cannot hurt to search even in today's economy there are jobs out there you just have to put in the time and effort during your job search.
The second thing that you need to do is to talk to your children and your family about your work schedule and see what they have to say about the issue. If you have younger children then they may want you to have more flexible work hours so that you can spend time with them and attend their school events.
The third thing that you need to do is to talk to your manager about your work schedule. Some employers will allow their employees to change their hours so that they can be with their families more. You could change your hours from 9 to 5 to 7 to 3 or even 8 to 4.
The fourth thing that you need to do is ask your employer if you can telecommute from home. Telecommuting can be very beneficial to employees if they are as productive as they were before beginning to telecommute. You need to be very disciplined and dedicated though because being at home can be distracting. It can be hard to telecommute because there are many distractions at home and being without any adult communication can make the whole process very mundane.
The fifth thing that you need to do is to take a vacation with your family; a vacation can rejuvenate you and make you feel more relaxed. Your vacation does not have to be very expensive, even a road trip can be a lot of fun for the entire family.
The sixth thing that you need to do is to take up a hobby such as running, yoga, golfing, painting, etc. It is important to make time for yourself everyday so that you can relax and enjoy your life.
Hopefully, these tips will help you achieve the right work-life balance. We all need to learn how to slow down and smell the roses.
