How to Act When You Encounter a Stray Dog

Jointer West
I have come across dogs in many places. Mostly I encounter dogs while walking or riding a bike down the road. Because of some mistakes and advice given to me from other people, I know some tips to help during a dog encounter.

Never look a dog in his eyes. I do not know why, but it can cause a dog to become violent or scared and pounce on you. Avoid looking a dog in his eyes, if you find yourself looking at the eyes, turn away.

Barking at a dog will provoke him. If a dog comes out barking at you, do not bark back at him.

Running from a dog is a bad idea. When a dog sees someone or something run from them, they give chase. I think this has something to do with the enemy on the run, giving chase finishes the victory.

Its best to walk away from a dog, but sometimes you have to stand against them. A problem here is a dog will try to get closer and closer to you. I have had to kick dirt or rocks at them to make them stop. Kicking at a dog is a bad solution, they will get more aggravated and will try to bite your foot.

Never pet any dog you come across. The dog could be a violent one and bite you. Also this will make some dogs will follow you to the ends of earth if it was possible.

It can be dangerous to stick you hand out for the dog to smell, but this will make some dogs more calm around you. Do not try it if the dog is barking and running at you. Its best to let them smell your hand when they meet you with their owner present.

Some dogs do not care about anything. They are out to bite and cause trouble no matter how you behave. Its strange, but there are dogs out here that pretend to be calm, and before you realize it they will jump on you for blood. One dog jumped up and chipped my tooth against his fang while chained up. Thanks to God that very bad dog was held back by his chain.

Dog packs are very bad situations. Even domestic dogs will get into groups and become a pack. When dogs are in a group they can behave like a pack of wolves. There was a pack of dogs that formed right here in Nassauville out of tamed pets. These pets would no longer come home and ran around wild together.

I have not had the curse of running into a pack of dogs, so I do not have any advice except to stay away from them. Also call the dog pound or animal control, these dogs are dangerous to anyone around.

God has saved me from many dog encounters. Like the dog that was chained up. This dog was famous for pouncing on people without warning. That chain kept the dog from getting on me after I fell backwards. Other dogs have come against me in groups (not a pack), I have seen these dogs turn and run yapping for no reason.

Encountering a dog can be very dangerous, use caution and try to stay away from a dog when you can. Its best to let the dog alone, then mess with it.

Great topic! Most people I'd say don't know how to react in a case like that. I for one had to witness my mom being attacked by two dogs when I was about 4 years old. I'll never forget it! We were walking down our street, and in the middle of the road (in a subdivision) two dogs were fighting. My mom, bless her heart, tried to stop them from fighting! No, you don't ever ever do that! They both turned on her and although no stitches were needed, I remember to this day, and I'm middle-aged, the massive bruises on her legs and arms! I live in the country and used to enjoy power walking on our back roads. Not anymore! Now I have a treadmill because here in "good ole boy" land, no ordinances exist to keep your dogs fenced in. I've been chased one too many times and felt the growling breath of a yard dog enough to know you don't stop and sweet talk them. They are "protecting their turf" I guess. I love dogs, but not meat eating ones! Thanks for a great read!
