How to Add Homemade Touches to Store Bought Food

With so many homes being a two income family, where all adults have a job it becomes very difficult to have a delicious dinner on the table that satisfies everyone's hunger for homemade. Here are a few tips to assist in making any dish taste fresh and delicious.

1. Keep fresh herbs in your fridge. Even if everything else you purchase is in cans and boxes make sure you have fresh herbs such as mint, parsley, basil, and dill. These four herbs when fresh can be added to canned soups, Hamburger Helper, and frozen skillet meals. This gives the meal a fresher flavor and shows your family you are willing to take that extra step. When making grilled cheese and tomato soup, chop up some fresh basil and toss it in, you would be amazed by the difference.

2. Citrus can add life to leftovers and stale meals. If you are having your standard quick box taco night pick up a few limes and squeeze that into the meat mixture. This gives it a tang and a fresher flavor. You can also add lemon zest or orange zest to almost any chicken or pork leftovers to give a different take on the BBQ chicken you had the night before or the Asian pork you had last weekend.

3. Textures can give dull foods a new kick. Tortilla chips broken up can be added to salad, Mexican meals of any sort and many different soups. You can also pick up chow mien noodle at your local grocery store, these can be added to soups and salads as well. Giving that extra crunch can change your limp foods to something more edible.

4. Garlic! Need I say more? With garlic make sure you have fresh garlic cloves they can be added to anything or rubbed on ordinary toasted sandwich bread for a different side for your soups. Chopped up garlic cloves with bring freshness to most any meal and more spice.

5. Lastly don't forget your veggies. Remember that although may have to buy boxed meals for time you can make up for it by having fresh vegetables available. Salads are pretty standard so take a different tact. With any boxed dinner dice some fresh onion into it, or shred some carrots. You can also use your leftover spaghetti sauce and pour it over a cooked spaghetti squash. Mushrooms are also very versatile and add an earthy flavor to a lot of canned goods.

Ultimately people do not have time to make meals from scratch much anymore but you can toss in a few things to create a new flavor or help a leftover gain new life. Also remember experiment, new exciting flavors will always bring people to the table!
