How to Add RAM to a Compaq Presario

Upgrading Memory in a Laptop Computer

Installing RAM on a Compaq Presario is a fairly simple, routine task that can be done with little trouble. RAM stands for Random Access Memory and it provides extra space for your computer to read and write data. Usually, when people refer to their computer's "memory" they're talking about RAM. If you add more RAM to a computer, you are also reducing the amount of times your CPU has to read data from the hard disk, which means it will considerably increase the speed of your computer.

Step 1

Purchase a RAM memory module from a computer store, making sure that it is compatible with your Compaq Presario.

Step 2

Turn off your computer and unplug it from any power sources. Remove the Presario's battery if applicable.

Step 3

Turn the laptop over. Using a screwdriver, remove the two screws on the RAM compartment. This compartment will be located near the center on the bottom of the laptop.

Step 4

Locate the empty slot in the memory compartment, and install the new memory module by sliding it into place. If both slots are already filled, you will need to replace one of them with the new memory module. Make sure not to install more than the manufacturer recommended amount of RAM for your current model. You can find this information in your Presario's manual.

Step 5

Re-install the memory compartment door by screwing it back down.

Step 6

Put the battery back into place, plug in the laptop and turn it on. The Presario will automatically recognize the new memory. Ensure that the new RAM is being recognized by the computer by checking the laptop's system properties and making sure that the laptop's memory has increased. For instance, if you added 256MB of RAM to a Compaq Presario that already had 256MB of RAM, it should show that the computer now has 512MB of RAM.

Tips

You can wear an anti-static band on your wrist while working on the computer, or touch the metal base of the PC before working on the computer. This will make sure you don't generate any static electricity.

Upgrading RAM on a Compaq Presario does not void the warranty.

Warnings

Never use magnetic screwdrivers to work inside of a computer; it will ruin your machine.

Never add more RAM or perform other types of computer maintenance without turning off the computer and unplugging it first.Source:Upgrading Laptop Memory on a Compaq Presario
