An urban living and fast paced society are two main evils forcing less courageous people to succumb to greater evils. We all wish to live in a totally stress-free situation, and the pursuit of this goal leads many of us to take up wrong paths. This results in the human body's dependency on a substance for its normal functioning. Quite obviously, the given situation can be termed as addiction. Also known as a recurring compulsion, it can go from bad to worse and, at times, prove to be life threatening. It jeopardizes an individual's physical, mental and social well being. Despite the dangerous after effects, the addict continues to indulge. Appropriately labeled as a menace, addiction can be either chemical or behavioral in nature. Mainly associated with drug and alcohol abuse, it exists in many forms and types that plague thousands of people. For instance, things like caffeine, cigarettes, computers, eating disorders, gambling, sex, shopping and work can become addictions. But no matter the type, a significant point to consider is that addiction is not a matter of choice. The increased reliance on something and its misuse makes an individual incapable of taking any decisions, particularly the decision to stop. It is not just the user who's affected by it, the effect can also be seen on their family and friends as well. Although the progressive abuse of something starts off as an "addiction" it gradually turns into a parasite. In spite of the person controlling the behavior, it controls the person. The addict feels as though he/she is living on automatic pilot. Often, the addiction becomes an indispensable part of life and one cannot exist without it. Trying to escape feelings like depression, boredom, rejection, grief, failure and frustration, becoming self-obsessive, reduced self-esteem, and seeking short-term pleasures are characteristics of an addict.

Getting addicted can be compared to creation of Frankenstein, one who creates it, owns it too. A pitiless monster, it has you completely engulfed in its grip. Although long and hard, the way to addiction recovery does exist. Putting an end to consistent suffering is requires a lot of physical and mental effort on the part of the addict as well the rehabilitator. Apart from modification of behavior and habits, recovery process also includes withdrawal symptoms. If faced with such symptoms, one should stay persistent and not give-up, that is the first step towards an addiction-free life. Realization and admittance on the part of the addict is an imperative second step towards retrieval. In order to breakthrough the vicious cycle of addiction one has to cut through the denial process. One should seek support from proven sources and follow all the necessary steps. Concatenating the plans into one's daily life, prioritizing your health and making consistent efforts help one in achieving a state of abstinence and, finally, sustainable recovery. A complete understanding of the underlying issues that drive addiction is an imperative measure if one wants to fight the monster and succeed. The reasons for falling into this dark pit are as diverse as the pit itself, yet one should be cautious and not let anything overpower you.
