How to Address a Judge

JR Smith
A courtroom is a very nerve racking place to be in particularly if you are there for any sort of series fines or issues. Often you will not see a jury because the case won't make it high enough into the court system. Instead, the judge is typically the one to make the final decision in your case, so needless to say it would be best not to upset him or her in anyway. The courtroom is a very official place and, depending on the seriousness of your crime, it may hold your future in its hands. This is why it is very important to know how to address a judge.

Body Language

When addressing the judge, make sure you are standing rather than sitting. This is very much a respect issue. Chances are you'll never speak to the judge but instead will be spoken for by your lawyer. Also, try not to add any awkward or unnecessary movements such as talking with your hands, pacing or fidgeting. This is basic speech 101 material that everyone should follow in general and by not doing these types of movements it makes you seem more confident and truthful, which in turn makes you appear more innocent.

Verbal Communication

The most universal way of addressing the judge is as "Your Honor." This may not always be the case so you may want to ask your representative or the court clerk to be sure. Never come in to the proceedings with gum or food of any kind in your mouth. Again this is just disrespectful in general. Also, before you speak make sure you are being asked a question by the judge or get permission. That is the proper way of addressing the judge; it too shows confidence and shows that you know how the court system works, which will gain you respect and credibility.

Those are some basic guidelines on how to address a judge. Be sure to discuss this further with your lawyer or other representative just to be sure these types of things are clear.
