Keep a Planner
Keeping a planner and actually using it is one of the most important and vital parts of adjusting to college life. It's important to remember that college professors tend to expect a lot more out of their students than the typical high school teacher, and that the workload in your college courses is going to be about twice what it would be in a high school class. In addition, you'll no doubt have a lot of social engagements and extracurricular activities, so it's going to be easy to lose track of all of these.
Thus, it is especially important to maintain your planner daily. A planner can usually be bought at your college bookstore, and there are numerous options available for you. It's best, however, if you choose one that has daily schedules, so that you can keep trap of appointments you might have, assignments that are due that day, etc. If you keep careful track of your commitments, activities, and assignments, your adjustment to college life will be much smoother.
Get Involved
Although you might think that extracurricular activities were just a way of getting you into college, think again. Getting involved with extracurricular activities in college is not only a great way to make friends, it's also an excellent and productive supplement to your academic studies. Certainly, your primary focus should always be on the academic part of your college life, but that doesn't mean that you shouldn't partake in organizations.
Of course, some kinds of extracurricular activities are more beneficial than others. Try to join organizations that meet your interests or hobbies. Your university or college will generally have a part of their website devoted to student groups, so feel free to just skim through the lists. Attend meetings that student groups might have in your dorms. You might be surprised by what you find.
Don't Procrastinate
This is the cardinal rule of adjusting to college life and making the most out of that first year, but it's the rule that's also the most easily broken. Whatever you do, don't procrastinate or put off assignments until the last minute, even if it means you have to give up something else to get it done. If you wait until the last minute, you won't be able to produce the best product, and your instructor will be able to see that in a heartbeat. Give yourself enough time to finish the project and to do a good job on it. Although it might be difficult, you will definitely see results in the end.
Clearly, adjusting to college life can be a very rigorous experience. However, there are some concrete steps that you as a student can take to make sure that you adjust well to the faster pace of college life and that you get the most out of your first year in college,
