How to Adjust a Garage Door

Brenda Hoffman
Over the course of time, a garage door's springs tend to loosen. For this reason you will need to learn how to adjust a garage door so that it has the right amount of spring tension to be able to open and close easily. Without the right amount of tension your garage door will not work properly.

Locate the garage door springs. If you have the type of garage door that you pull open from a bottom handle, otherwise known as swing-up doors, there will be a spring on each side.

Close your garage door. Remove one of the springs from the bracket to which it is connected.

Place the hook end of the loose spring into the next hole down. This means that if the spring was in the third hole from the top of the bracket, you will want to place it in the fourth hole. Now do this with the spring on the other side of the garage door too.

Once this part has been done to adjust a garage door, you will want to open the garage door and check the tension. If more tension is needed, close the garage door and pull the spring down one more hole. Now adjust the garage door on the other side too.

Make sure that the spring's tension isn't too tight. If it is hard to open the door or the garage door slams shut, then you will need to adjust the garage door again. Place the spring one hole higher on the garage door bracket.

While you are adjusting your garage door, you will want to check to see if the spring is rusty. If you find yourself unable to maneuver it into a different hole on the bracket, then you will want to change this spring.
