How to Adopt a Soldier

Kellen Cooper
Right now there are over 150,000 American soldiers in Iraq, many of whom do not have family back home, or whose families cannot afford to send them packages. To help, you can adopt a soldier through several different websites online. They can help you find a soldier to write to or send packages to. Or, you can donate to these websites, and they will provide a soldier with a package. Some websites focus on injured soldiers, and will provide a brave soldier with a group of comforting items, such as blankets and magazines. It is easy to adopt a soldier, and very rewarding.

Some organizations are Soldiers' Angels, Any Soldier, Adopt a US Soldier, and Adopt a Platoon. Soldiers' Angels, for example, asks that you adopt a soldier, and then allows you to join other groups that write one-time letters to individuals, or send blankets to hospitals. When you adopt a soldier through them, you are asked to write a snail-mail letter once a week, and mail a package every two weeks. Sometimes your soldier will write back to you with snail mail or email which will be all reward you'll need. Soldier's Angels provides a forum where volunteers can discuss troops that need extra support, heart-warming stories of thank-you's from their soldier, and package ideas.

It is fairly inexpensive to send a package. The contents vary according to what your soldier might need, and what you can afford, but generally you can fill a box with snacks and magazines for under $20. Then, the best way to mail a package is by priority mail flat rate boxes. These cost $8.95 regardless of weight. You do not have to pay international shipping, because once it reaches the Military mail system, the shipping is free.

Some soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan do not have access to basic necessities, especially those needed by female soldiers. Some live in tents, and have very little entertainment. You can help raise the moral of any soldier just by writing a letter. Around holidays, it is nice to send your soldier a themed package, and several blank cards and envelopes so they can fill them out and send them to their family.

Some ideas for what to send in packages include beef jerky, toothpaste, magazines, DVDS and CDs, sand-colored t-shirts, cookies, and packaged soups. Sites like Soldiers' Angels offer extensive advice on what to send. The best way to know what to send is to ask your soldier about what they need. Many soldiers don't have time to reply, so then you can use lists of the most commonly requested items to stock your box.
