Materials Needed for the Adult Halloween Burlap Bag Costume
6 Yards of Burlap Material - This can be bought at any craft store that carries burlap by the yard unless you have a burlap bag. I put six yards of burlap material for someone who is 5' 7" tall. If you are taller or shorter than that, take a yard stick or measuring tape and measure from your shoulder to your knees. Take the inches and multiply it by two for the amount of burlap you will need.
Twine - This will be used to sew the burlap sides and top together.
Scissors - So you can cut the burlap in half and cut the twine to sew the burlap together.
Doll Needle - The doll needle should have an eye large enough to get the twine through for putting the burlap together.
Straight Pins - You will need enough to pin the burlap together in a rectangle.
Clothes to Wear Under the Costume - You can wear whatever type of clothes you want under this costume. I would suggest wearing something that will keep you warm.
Making the Adult Halloween Burlap Bag Costume
Fold the burlap in half vertically and pin the bottom ends together. This will keep the material from moving while cutting. You can pin near the top of the fabric to hold in place while you are cutting the material apart. You will want to leave room to get the scissors through to cut it apart. Leave the straight pins in place. You may want to pin along the sides to keep the sides together.
Thread enough twine through the eye of the needle and make a knot. Sew about four inches down one side. When you have completed the four inch mark, cut the twine loose and tie off. Do this on the other side too. Leave enough of an opening for your arm to go through and finish sewing the sides together. Remove the straight pins from the sides.
On either end of the burlap, you will want to measure equally across from both sides to leave an opening large enough for your head to go through. Once you have decided which end you are going to use for the top of the costume, you can remove the straight pins from the other end. Use straight pins to mark each side of the opening. Sew across each side with the twine to close off the shoulders like you did with the sides. Remove the rest of the straight pins.
If you want to hem the bottom of the burlap bag costume, you can do so after completing the rest of the steps. This step is optional.
That is the completed burlap bag Halloween costume. Just slide it over your clothes before going to your Halloween party.
NOTE: If you are wanting to make this for a child, the only thing that will change is the large amount of burlap needed for the costume. All the other directions will remain the same; including how to measure the child for the amount needed for the burlap. The measurements for the arm and head openings should be adjusted accordingly for the child.
