How to Afford the Adoption

Dawn Jackson
Kristen and Adam dreamed of a child. After six years of marriage and many years of trying for a baby, Kristen and Adam decided to give a child a home. After months and months of researching the couple decided on adopting from Russia. The one major hurdle stood their way. They needed about $30,000 to pay for the adoption. Like most Americans this kind of cash was hard to come by. To fulfill their dream of a child the couple got creative.

First opened his employee handbook and found that his company offered an Adoption benefit. He was able to get a $5,000 dollar direct reimbursement upon the actual placement of a child. This was a flat amount designated for specific adoption expenses. He was also allowed paid time off to travel and time to bond with his new son.

The next thing Kristen and Adam did was to make an appointment with their account. The account advised them that they qualified for a$10,960 adoption tax credit after their adoption was final. This meant if they owed the federal government $12,000 dollars then their tax bill was reduced to $1040.

Kristen and Adam also organized a dinner to help raise money. Kristen's parents and grandparents donated food for dinner. The dinner was held on a Friday night before a hometown football game. An announcement for the dinner was printed in the local newspaper. The school donated the cafeteria for the dinner. Each guest was charged $5.00 dollars a plate. The couple made $3000 dollars for the adoption.

Kristen also started a part time job she could do from home after the baby was home. She started taking calls for www.workat homeagents.com. She made $8.00 an hour in the early morning hours. She also worked full time for them on the weekends. Over six months she made $3500 dollars for the adoption. She loved this job because it was enough that she could replace her income and stay home with the baby.

Adam and Kristen made a long list of friends and family. Then he couple wrote a letter asking their family for donation for the baby. They asked for $10, $20 or $50 dollars. They asked for this money instead of birthday and Christmas money. Through this letter they were able to educate everyone about adoption and Russia. They also cleaned out their closets and had a garage raised sale. In the garage sale they raised $400 dollars. With the letter the couple received $500.

For the last of the money the couple to out a home equity lines of credit. This type of loan is easy to get cash out of. It has a higher interest rate than a traditional mortgage. It also has a balloon payment at the end. It is usually a low monthly payment.

After all their hard work Adam and Kristen brought home a baby boy. His name is Alexander Thomas. He was named after his grandfathers. Kristen and Adam put their mind to it and made a dream come true.
