Birthday parties are not cheap. Between the location, cake, goody bags, and invitations it can easily set you back hundreds of dollars. Between the outrageously expensive birthday party shows on TV and parental peer pressure, the societal expectations for birthday parties just keeps going up. These tips will help you throw a classy birthday party without spending a fortune.
Location
By far the most expensive item for any birthday party is usually the location. You can avoid this cost all together by hosting the party at your house. There are trade offs though. If you decide to save money by hosting the party at your house remember you will need to provide entertainment - something that is usually included in venues outside your house.
Entertainment for birthday parties thrown at your home will vary depending on the age of your child. Younger children can get away with crafts and party games. For older children you can clear the living room and turn it into a dance party.
When looking for a birthday party venue outside the home check to see what is included in the price. Several places will throw in invitations, thank you cards, food and drink, and other items that you would otherwise have the purchase.
You don't have to invite every child in the class.
Whether you are hosting the party at your house or having it at a birthday party venue, you will save money by inviting fewer children. It is not necessary to invite every kid in the class but there are some do's and don'ts to keep in mind.
Do send invitations to the children's houses instead of passing them out at school. You will pay a little more in terms of time and stamps, but it is worth it not to hurt feelings.
Don't invite everyone in the class except one or two kids. It is usually a good idea to invite less than half of the class if you are not inviting them all.
Make cheap or free goody bags.
I love to make free goody bags to give away at my child's birthday party. It saves money as helps you get rid of the little toys that tend to clutter up the house. Go through your child's toys and select small items that they do not play with anymore. They could be bakugans, happy meal toys, or even crayons. You can buy plain paper bags pretty cheaply. You can decorate the bags before the party or plan a craft activity where each child can decorate their own bag. Put a few of the used toys in the bags and there you're set with the goody bags on a budget.
Make your own cupcakes.
Professionally made cakes are generally overpriced and contain way too much sugar and artificial dyes. Make your own cupcakes to save money and provide a healthier treat for the kids.
