How Do Airlines Create Their Flight Numbers?

GK
Airline flight numbers may appear in random order at all times. The random order of these numbers absolutely has a method behind it. Airline companies would not just create flight numbers in random order without following any method or process. Most airline companies create their own flight numbers with the use of an internal methodology. However, they still need to have proper coordination with other airline companies as well when it comes to selection and ordering of flight numbers. The reason for this is to prevent confusion on the part of the passengers or clients when it comes to flight control towers.

The American Airlines and United Airlines cannot have two traveling planes with the same or similar flight numbers especially if the planes are arriving at exactly the same time. All airline companies are under the governance of IATA or International Air Transport Association. IATA is the one entity that is responsible in approving flight numbers prior to the implementation of the airline company who submit it.

Most of the flight numbers assigned to airline companies are usually based on the general directions of the flight. Airplanes that are heading east or north directions are designated with even flight numbers whereas airplanes that go to west or south directions are assigned with odd flight numbers. For return flights, the usually flight numbers assigned are one number higher than the numbers of the departure flight. In this way, it would be easier for the passengers to remember whichever return flight they about to take.

Airline companies can also designate flight numbers that are based on a set of corresponding parameters. There are some major airline companies that limit their designated flight numbers from 1 to 499. Some airline companies would even take a small carrier with designated flight numbers between 500 and 749. Nevertheless, creating flight numbers may always depend on the rules of the airplane companies.

Small regional airline companies have a practice of the so-called "code sharing" when it comes to creating flight numbers. In other words, creating flight numbers can be a joint effort. However, they still need the proper coordination with other major airline companies so as to avoid confusion.

There are some airline companies that create their flight numbers based on the destinations of kind of passengers being carried. For international flights, the numbers may always have three digits whereas domestic flights only have one digit. Apparently, this practice may always vary from one airline to another airline because of inconsistency. Meanwhile, chartered flights have the so-called "special flight numbers". This is done for the purpose of easier recognition by the airline employees.
