How Allergies Affect Your Mood

Tom Servo
Ask any allergy sufferer and they will tell you that they feel miserable when they are experiencing allergy symptoms. Since allergies make people feel so miserable, it's only natural that their mood and energy levels would change. Since these changes are not usually positive for most people, being able to control allergy symptoms is very important to them.

Allergies can affect your mood in a number of ways. With all the itchy, watery eyes, wiping and blowing your nose, and sneezing, who can feel happy? Imagine a time when you felt so horrible that you couldn't even get out of bed and you felt like you'd never feel better again. If you have ever felt like that, then you have a pretty good idea what an allergy sufferer goes through. Sometimes, an allergy sufferer experiences mood changes as a result of the medications they are taking to help alleviate their symptoms. Many of the medications that help allergies often cause drowsiness, which don't make you feel better, but just sleepy. Then there are some medications that you can take over-the-counter that will help control the allergies and not make you sleepy, but they will dry out your sinuses and your eyes, only giving you a different set of symptoms. When this happens, you can choose to deal with the side effects of the medication or choose to deal with the allergy symptoms. Although the symptoms of the allergy can cause you to suffer, the side effects can be just as bad or worse.

Your allergies also can affect your energy level in a negative way. While your immune system is constantly battling all the things that you are allergic to, you are bound to notice a drop in the amount of energy you have. As a form of protection, your immune system releases all kinds of hormones and defense mechanisms to protect your body. Energy is required to make all of that happen, so naturally, you are going to feel like you have less energy when your allergies are at their worst. In all reality, your body has the same amount of energy, but is using it in a different way.

The best way to deal with the lack of energy during these allergic symptoms is to find a medication that works for you and then take it. Then talk to your doctor about the symptoms you are experiencing and they will be able to recommend something that will help. Sometimes you may need to switch medications until you find the right one that works for you. Make sure you give each medication a fair chance to work before trying the next one. Once you find the right medication, then you won't have to worry about lack of energy and your allergy symptoms getting the best of you. You will be able to return to your life, go outside, have pets, and have energy. As long as you take your medications on a timely basis, you can do anything you want to.
