Back in my college days, I roomed with a law major from Chicago. Although we got along, he was one of the most annoying individuals I have ever known. He had very different study habits than I did. He had to leave the room light on all night. He also had to listen to WLS on his radio all night long. To make matters worst, he was a die-hard Chicago Blackhawks fan. I am a St. Louis Blues fan.
In order to survive the year, I had to figure out a way for us to coexist in the same dorm room. This article will give you some ideas that might help you coexist with your college roommate.
Establish Some Room Rules
Things that need to be talked about are study(quiet) hours, respect for personal belongings, guest rules and times, security of belongings, sharing of toilet items, hygiene, room chores, food and snack responsibilities and sleep times.
Communication
You can't always communicate enough with your roommate. Try to develop a strong understanding for your roommates likes and dislikes. Become a good listener. This way you keep a healthy balance between the two of you.
Consideration
If you go our for pizza or a soft drink, remember your roommate. Don't be reminded about your responsibilities. If it is your time to clean the room, do it promptly. If you borrow something, return it in good shape. Remind your visitors to respect your roommates belongings.
Avoid confrontations
If your conversation starts to wander into uncharted territory, drop the subject. You can easily walk into this trap, when discussing politics, religion and dating experiences.
Entertainment flaps
My roommate liked to listen to the radio all night. I solved this problem by purchasing a set of earphones with a 15 foot extension line on it. He could listen all night long without disturbing me, while I studied. He appreciated the effort on my part.

This is a good list for any roommate. It is a trying experience.
Thanks! Good suggestions
Flunking out with two room mates when I first went to college wound up leading me to the woman with whom I will celebrate 45 years of marriage in March 2012. I am delighted that the room mate thing just did not work out for me!
Just found out from a friend whose daughter will be a college freshman that the kids who don't make roommate requests for existing friends are picking their roommates on Facebook through sites the colleges have set up. Interesting.
Great info, very helpful. Bill, You Are Amazing!!! :o)
