How to Get Along with Your Ex

Meg G.
Getting along with your ex is something you should do for yourself. Being bitter and holding grudges isn't good for your emotional well-being. That being said, it's not easy to be nice to your ex, but here are some tips to help you along the way.

If You Have Children, Focus on Them

So you had a child with the world's worst man. Focus on your child. Your ex may be a total jerk, but he gave you the most precious gift possible. Focus on the good and you will be surprised how much easier it will be to get along.

Remember what Attracted You

I know you two are polar opposites, and staying together could end someone in jail for a murder sentence. However, you dated him for a reason. Remember what it was that attracted you in the first place and you may find it easier to get along.

You're Not Perfect, Either

No one is perfect. Consider the fact that you likely make their skin crawl like they do you, and respect them for this. Being empathetic with him could help you build up a respect that will allow you to stay in the same vicinity and have the same circle of friends without too much drama.

Take a Break

If you share friends and just can't stomach being around your ex, be the bigger person and don't make everyone choose sides. Instead, take a break and foster your other interests. Make some new friends or a positive change in your life and you will feel less resentment.

Getting along with an ex can be difficult, but we are all adults. Remembering these tips will help you be able to stomach being around your ex and help you keep your mental health.
