How to Make Alphabet Lap Books!

Mrs. Renee
Alphabet lap books are really a great way to get kids to learn their alphabet, and it is really fun for young children to put together. Alphabet lap books are actually very easy to create. Just follow the steps below to create your alphabet lap books.

What you need

Some of the items you will want to put on your shopping list include a box of manila folders, computer paper, construction paper, glue, and alphabet print outs. To make sure that you have enough it would probably be a good idea to have at least one box of manila folders per child. You will also want to make sure you have plenty of crayons, markers and pencils. For the print outs you can easily do a Google search to find some online options for printing out the alphabet letters, and different pictures. It is a good idea to have the entire lap booking supplies ready before you start working on the project.

How to get started

First you will want to start with one letter of the alphabet at a time. The first thing you will want to have is an alphabet strip. You can easily create an alphabet strip on your computer. Just type in the alphabet, and then print out the sheet. Have the kids cut out the strip to have on the front of their lap book. After you have your strip you will want to get started folding your lap book into four sections. Lay the folder flat on the table, then fold each side in half. Try to line up the two sides so that they almost fit together. You can really fold it any way you would like to create the number of columns that you like. Once you have finished making the folds you can attach your alphabet strip to the front of the folder.

Start with the beginning of the alphabet or, whatever letters you choose to start with. I also like to have the kids write their name on the bottom of the lap book. In the middle you will want to draw a large letter, (such as A), if that is what you are starting with. On the front flap you will want to have the kids start putting pictures that go with the letter "A". For example you can put pictures of apples, and acorns. Underneath every picture you can help the kids write the word that goes with the picture. You can have the kids cut the pictures out of a magazine or, you can just have them draw them.

The benefits

What is really nice about this is that the project can last for the entire week. This is about the amount of time it will take for the kids to fill the lap book with all the corresponding words. At the end of the week they will have their letter lap book. I like to use a binder to keep all of the lap books, and then within a few months they will have the entire alphabet in lap books. You can whole punch the folders, and place them into the binder. This is really a great way to help your children learn the alphabet, and really remember their letters. It is also a great way to help them with their beginning writing skills. For kids who don't like to write much this would be a really good way to have them do a little bit of creative writing each day.
